I've been thinking that the GA is hardcoded to match history unless you get lucky and can build the right combo of wonders earlier. But this doesn't always make sense during a game because your GA could be triggered while you are weak. I wish we had the ability to set our own triggers. I'd prefer to see it triggered by things such as eliminating a civ, or capturing a capitol, or having culture twice the next highest civ, or you've killed x number of enemy units, or evey civ is polite or better towards you, etc.

Am I the only one that wishes GAs were triggered differently?

GA = Golden Age

I think that events should be ANOTHER way of triggering a GA, alongside those which already exist!! Thanks for the suggestion Alpha Wolf, I'd not thought of that until you mentioned it!!

I'd like to see the possibility of two golden ages, one triggered by UU victory and the other triggered by wonder construction.

How about having happy citizens (lots of We Love ... Days) and discovering stuff before other civs? That would seem to be part of what triggers golden ages in reality.

like an "intellectual" GA instead of just a military one?

Essentially, yes. Rewarding a civ's (player's) leadership in more areas than just production and combat strategy.

I was thinking along these lines as well... I don't know how many times I've triggered my GA before I wanted to by building Wonders. Doing this would allow me to still hold one in reserve for when I really want it, by using my UU.

This would also help those civs with early/late game UU's, as it would provide a way for them to trigger a golden age mid-game as well.

I think this is a great idea!

They seem to already be heading in that direction with "Scientific Great Leaders"

The possibility of having more than one Golden Age is a good option, but part of why these times of prosperity are called Golden Ages is because they only happen once; i.e. are unique. In reality most nationalities have only had one "golden age," if any. Personally, I find that the Golden Ages in Civ3 are too short --but that can easily be changed thorugh the Editor.
