One of the changes that I've found to be the most enjoyable is the changes to exploration. Here they are:

o Map Trading requires [Navigation]
o Communications Trading requires Printing Press
o Explorers available w/ Astronomy

These may not seem like big changes, but they GREATLY affect the Exploration and Trading portions of the game. This prevents the AI from map trading so the World Map is usually fogged until the late Middle Ages. This gives Expansionist & Seafaring Civilizations an incredible advantage in the early game. Through quick exploration you can trade your territory map for BIG items such as key techs and gold from the AI. With the trading and communications as optional paths the fog stays around even longer. With Explorers available on the key optional path they become much more useful!

Major kudos to the beta testers for opening up this end of the game! You know who you are!

On the harder difficulty levels be sure to use communications as a way to gain major trading favors and tech swapping. Doing this allowed me to play a peaceful game on Demi-God until the late 1700's!!

Thanks for all the information you've been giving us

when I first herad about all this I didnt like it, but after stating a new game after months of not playing, on a world map (fan mande) with the Romans (modded to me Mil+Ind) I find that I will like this change :)

:-D I knew from hearing this that it would change the dynamics of the game. Although doesn't it slow the tech pace a lot during the early years? I find it goes slow enough as it is. I'm slightly worried that without trading contacts the tech pace may slow too far.

It won't, I've been playing like this for awhile in my mod. Except, I have "Map Trading" pushed back to "Navigation."

Mr. Black - I stand correct, Navigation is what is required for Map Trading.

Does this mean that you cannot trade territory maps until Navigation or just world maps?

It is most likely, both have to wait, until Navigation. It's good, Explorers will now be able to explore.

Whew! When you take all the changes into consideration, other than the mechanics, its a whole new game.

I wonder how the GOTM strategies will have to change.

hmm...this is going to require a lot more manual exploration on my part from now on, but it shouldn't be too much of a pain. in fact, if you're careful, you can probably pretty much keep a monopoly on intercontinental trading easier with these changes.
edit: i'd like to add that i'm really looking forward to this though...it's going to be a whole new game, almost.

Number One and Three are good but I don't like number two at all, will it be easy to mod back to normal.

I would like to see more realistic explorers; in that they would be able to claim land for your civilization. An explorer should have the option to (C)laim land, and then that square (perhaps the adjacent squares either?) would be yours; within new cultural borders.

But if you don't push this back also you will have contact with the whole world in the ancient era even though you don't have clue where anyone is.

I had mistakenly thought printing press was an industrial age tech, given it's actual position (Medieval) I suppose it is ok where it is.

This would be way to powerful. If you get explorers before anybody else, and you find a new continent with your carracks, you can gain a ton of land, without any cities. If this was applicable, then why not let all terrain your troops are on belong to you (thereby deleting the need for a right of passage). It's jsut too powerful. Good idea historically though.

Maybe there could be an option to claim rights to a certain strip of land but not to actually own it. Then these strips could be exchanged in the trade menu like cities. It would bring an intresting new dynamic to the game, methinks, being able to shape borders, etc.

I've had my game modded like this (Map Trading requires [Navigation] and Communications Trading requires Printing Press) for over a year and I wouldn't play it any other way. Really gives the Ancient Age a much better feel.

Glad that the change is "official" now... :)
