Pollution has been change quite a bit. Pollution is produced by individual buildings, not as a function of your shield production:
Airport: 1
Coal Plant: 2
Factory: 2
Iron Works: 4
Manufacturing Plant: 4
Offshore Platform: 2
Research Lab: 1
Also, each citizen over 12 produces 1 pollution point. The percent chance of a pollution square appearing each turn is the sum of the pollution points generated by that city. Mass Transit reduces the pollution from people and Recycling Center reduces the pollution from improvements. Hydro, Nuclear, and Solar Plants don't reduce pollution anymore--they just provide the benefits of Coal Power (+50% to factory production) without making more pollution. Hydro Plants can only be built in cities with a river in their city radius. Nuclear Plants can only be built in cities with a river or water square in their radius. Solar Plants can be built anywhere but they're really expensive and only arrive late in the game.

Global Warming is based on the total pollution produced each turn, not how many polluted squares are in existence. You can't just clean it up really quickly and avoid the effects like in the older games--you have to avoid pollution altogether if you want to stave off Global Warming. Also, Nuclear Explosions really increase the chances of global warming.

Global Warming? Sounds neat, but can we turn it off to make the game more realistic? :)

This is really good stuff...:goodjob:

This means that the modern age will be much less about war when civs have to worry about the pollution or get thrown back to the dark age because of global warming wasting all squares.

Ummm.. Turning it off would make it Unrealistic. Our little planet is currently heating up quite nicely due to a lack of interest by the natives. Hope you like camels, 'cause your grandchildren may be seeing a lot of them

Riiight..

And if this game were made in the seventies it would be Global Cooling instead.

I can think of a better, more realistic game ending disaster.

Wacko environmentalists who are convinced humanity must be destroyed in order to save the Spotted Owl have just released a plague! Oh wait, that was Rainbow Six.

:rotfl:

We all know -hopefully- that using nukes woudl bring about a nuclear winter! Pity Firaxis didn't have that scenario for too many nukes used...

Nuclear winters are caused by the dust thrown up, the smoke generated by millions of square kilometers buring. Very much like the opening of the Deccan Traps causing global cooling or the 65 MA Meteor...

Camels? Hey, we'll be eating them!

One hump or two!

Maybe you should try to play CtP with the eco-terrorists:frog:

In addition to my previous post: global warming was not an issue before 1950 in Europe for the major reason that dust and soot from coal burning...in the Victorian period a mini-iceage occured in England brought on my the lack of sunlight penetrating the soot!

Nah, CtP is just a pretender to the throne.

How much longer until the coronation of the real king? :D

eco-terrorists?

Well that would make the game like-life. We wouldn't have a California energy crisis if the "no-nuke" buttheads didn't interfere with building multiple nuke plants in the West.

Hey, can we add
Short-sighted politicians? The cause nothing usefull to happen :D

you wouldn't have a california energy crisis if you'd turn off the TV, the hairdryer, and all those lights around the mirror in your dressing room:lol:

Well, yes or the Alberta Government could stopping being so greedy about the natural gas and oil in thier territory :)

I think the great hippo will agree,

We are talking vital CIV3 concepts here!
There is a place for real-life enviromental tete-a-tetes,

It's called woodstock!

Now let us get back to our warmongering, please!

The cute thing is that Global Warming *triggers* Ice Ages. So first one, than the other.

Ah, complex chaotic systems...

What does it matter what nationality i am?...Is it because americans are precieved as being anti-environmental?...HA!
