So there seems to be a good number of Europa-Universalis and HOI playes on these forums. Anyone currently playing Vicotria? I just got the game last night and just like Europa it's quite the struggle to learn the game. But it looks much more rich and complex then Europa.

Being a EU2 and HoI addict, this is of course on my Christmas list. Hopefully I will get it for Christmas, otherwise, I will get it sometime in January, but I don't know if I can wait that long. :)

It sounds like a good game, considering that it's a virtual sequel to Europa Universalis. How does the game work?

It's no Civ that's for sure... I even have problems balancing the budget right at the outstart, :lol: but then I picked an 'uncivilised country' like China and Japan in 1836.

I have it and it is tons of fun. The US now controls Mexico as an satellite :p

Anyone has a summary of what to do when starting out? I'm bewildered by the mass of minutae...

Also which country to pick (for learning purposes) for a starter (no EU or HoI exp)? :)

Superb game!! I always prefer Paradox's games to the civ series, EU2 anyway. That was a far batter game in my opinion. Victoria: An Empire Under The Sun, is now my favourite strategy type game.

Why? In December of 1845, Texas applies for admission to the US.

Well for a first game, maybe you should choose one of the great powers and not an "uncivilised" nation. I was going to choose the UK, but with all those territories spread across the map, I decided not to and to play as the USA instead. That's easy enough.

In my current game, when I started, I just concentrated on building a decent army (and recruiting reserves) and getting a stable economy. Currently, I'm building a railroad from Los Angeles (which I got from Mexico through war) on the Pacific, to some province (I haven't yet chosen) on the Atlantic coast.

Yeah I know then Mexico declared war on me which I worked them getting , Arziona, New Mexico, Calfornia and Neveda and made them into my vassal.

@XIII

Try US lots of room to expand a "sandbox nation"

Actually, on my current game - USA 1860 - Texas never applied for admission to the USA. I don't know why. I was in an early war against Mexico, as was Texas of course, but by December of 1845 we were both at peace - but they never applied. I don't know why. I know they can decide against it, but I don't remember that happening. So now, in 1860, the Republic of Texas remains, though with only Austin, Dallas and Lubbock. They lost both Amarillo and Houston to Mexico, and I have since conquered them.

Following two wars against Mexico, I now have basically all of the modern USA. Bar of course, some of Texas, and one state which I can't claim as I have claims on one of its provinces, and Mexico has claims on the other two. Oh, and Hawaii and Alaska, of course. I had a huge army for the second war. No contest. As soon as this peace treaty expires, I'm going to start another Mexican war.

Finally, it's 1860, civil war is on the horizon. Or is it? I'm quite certain that if the Republicans don't win the election, then there is no civil war. That may sound like a good thing, but apparently that means slavery is here to stay. The Democrats won the 1859 election but the Republicans (newly formed) were gaining ground on them, so I called another one. Unfortunately, with only a few months to the election, the Democrats lead with 52% to the Republican's 28%.

See, it's a great game. :)

@phoenix_night

Texas does have the option to stay independat. I looked at the events text and it can apply to join the US or stay independat

If u want to see your self go to Victoria's directory:

You can see anyones events by doing this.

Yeah, I did just that. Joined Texas in a war with Mexico - got trounced. I think I didn't expand my units to full status... :lol:

This game has a very steep learning curve, but I think it's worth it. :)

@Constantine,
Yeah, I saw that, so I loaded my saved game and looked through the history. Went to December of 1845 but there was nothing saying they chose independence. Maybe if I load it as Texas I'll be able to see it. I suppose I'll just have to annex them then. Worst thing is, if I hadn't saved them from the Mexicans in the second Mexico-Texas war, then I could've bought the territory from Mexico.

:eek:

Lost against Mexico?

As the USA, you should be able to trounce Mexico. You can field huge armies. Make you sure you invest enough in defence to keep your manpower up. Also, go into your provinces and manually convert POPs (farmers, labourers) to soldiers. You can easily and quickly boost your manpower this way, with no real limit. You should have enough money to pay for extra soldiers and as a great power you should be able to get any resources you need from the world market if you don't produce them. Another important thing, is to keep a high number in your reserves. You can increase your reserve by five divisions every six months (for a small cost in items). As soon as war starts (or before), you can mobilize and have your army size swell considerably.

Remember not all divisions are the same. Infantry/Cavaly, Regular/Irregular, or artillery divisions for example. They all have different values and can travel at different speeds. Remember to assign leaders, it'll cost you 20 leadership points but can seriously better your fighting force. As does, of course, investing the maximum amount in your army (/navy).

You really shouldn't lose a war against Mexico. I've fought two agressive wars against Mexico, in both winning 60+ war points worth of provinces; I also fought a war to guarantee Texas's independence, succesfully.

Now, go trounce Mexico!

Nay, I'm still trying to figure out the economics. The US is really too huge to manage microscopicly... ;)

What I'm getting from is that the pleasures of this game are practically esoteric, appealing only to history and strategy geeks.

Here's to waiting for a Mac port :D!

Well Texas is annexed, Mexico has just two provinces remaining. No civil war.

As the USA, you really don't need to do much, just watch all the money pile up, and build a nice big imperial army. Then, conquer Mexico!
