In some posts, the Mongols don't seem to shine as one of the best CIVs. My question is, was I just lucky? I'm wining a totally random Regent game as the Mongols on a map with three big islands.

I was ahead in TECHs by the Industrail Age and had the most money, and population (I wasn't on the biggest island). Wiped out the Russians and Maya with my Keshiks and now Spain and Rome are feeling the blast of my modern armor and dozens of paratroopers and marines storming their island.

Like above, my basic question is this normal for a Mongol player? I'd rate myself an average player, stuck in Regent, winning about 65% of the time by either points or a space race. Half warmonger/ half builder.

I really don't know what you mean:confused:
If you mean tech lead, it's easy with any civ in Regent, not just with Mongols;)

Yup, tech lead. It may be easy for you, but not for me. I guess because I never have tried the 0% science 100% tax route to buying techs. I try to keep up with my science as high as possible, while still making income.

I have a feeling that my approach is a lot different than the really great CIV players.

In regent I use 100% research in Ancient Age. You can get techs much faster than AIs because they can't micromanage their cities, research, workers etc.

I don't think it matters if you are Mongel or not... you could have done just as well with any civ.

The Keshiks are a weak unique unit... cheaper than the knights they replace and the mountain crossing ability is helpful in the odd chance that you have a lot of mountains to cross. They also don't require iron.

It's just you, man.

Man i understand you! To be serious i'd say the Mongol has one of the best civ unit in this game.

I am playing the Celts and their swordman kinda suck unless u spawn next to some iron

The Mongols are widely considered not an exceptionally good civ, because their trait combo isn't that terrific, and because their UU doesn't shine exceptionally either. Nothing wrong with Mil and Exp, but who wouldn't like Ind and Agr instead? Reduced price tag on the Keshik is nice, but you could live without the downgraded defense. And don't look even vaguely in the direction of Arabia - the Ansar Warrior is so much better it's not funny.

You're right about that Ansar Warrior. It kicked butt in a long ago game I played.

I think with the Mongols, you have to really concentrate on rapid expansion, then conquer your neighbors.

As far as I know, each and every civ has a number of unique strategies tailored around them... Mongols are no exception. I honestly don't think there are any bad civs. It's all in how you play them.
