There's been some discussion down in an HOF forum thread about autorazing and I couldn't answer all of the questions, so I thought I'd pose them here where there's more traffic/experts.

The situation is regarding taking over a pop-1 AI city and what triggers autorazing. I know that if the town has had a cultural border expansion, it won't autoraze. So what I need to know is this:
1) If the border has not expanded but the town has generated any culture (i.e. 1-9 points), will that prevent autoraze?
2) Do possession of Great Wonders prevent autoraze before a border expansion?

1. I'm fairly sure that if there is any culture (or culture-producing buildings) in a cuty, it will not autorazed.
2. A wonder is a cultural building, so even if this is the first turn built and the city has no culture, it will not autoraze.

So you're thinking that all autoraze is prevented by mere possession of any culture generator? Can anyone confirm this?

I'm not sure this is a definitive answer, Duke Togo.

If an AI capital city (viz. Has a culture-producing Palace) is ONE population and has less than 10 culture points it WILL auto-raze! ;)

Yes, EMan is right.

But citizens nationality plays also a role.
Say, you capture a city that never had accumulated any single culture point (under any rule) from civ A. Now you starve the pop down to one (the last citizen has still the nationality A) and A can retake the city w/o autorazing.

I even think that size 1 towns w/o culture will not be razed if that lone citizen's nationality is not identical with the current owner's nationality (you capture civ A's town with citizen of nationality A and civ B can capture that size 1 town from you w/o autorazing).

The exact details of the cut-off point has changed with the various updates (patches & expansions). That is what causes the confusion. ;)

Originally, I believe that the *any* culture was the key. At some point that got changed to "at least 10 Culture Points (enough to expand the borders). I *think* (ands I may be wrong) that if you are playing Civ3 v1.29f, or PTW or Conquests, the formula is 10 CP/Border expansion.

This is not the case w/ starting capitals. Just yesterday I capture Babylon at size 1, and it did not auto-raze; however, the city to where th capital jumps will/does auto-raze if size 1. Now, if culture benchmarks have been met, it will not.

Of course, I had no way of knowing Babylon's culture points.

Erm, of course not. But if the city had size 30 (or just 2), local culture would not play a role anyways (no auto-razing) regardless of culture accumulated. We're just considering size 1 towns here.;)

I think dojoboy was talking about capturing the 'default' capital of Babylon with only one pop point (most likely) before turn 10 (i.e. no expansion yet). I never knew that this is an exception to the autoraze rule.
