Here is first draft of the map I have created for an Old West scenario.

area is 76x56, one square being one degree of latitude or longitude.

Please tell me what you think of this map so far.

I'd say it's pretty good, but I don't like all that jungle in Mexico...

I made Canada tundra and Mexico jungle so they would be impassable. Sorry, but I wanted to concentrate on the western U.S. only. I don't like cities on the edge of the map, but will be unavoidable with the eastern edge (90th meridian).

I think you should include part of Northern Mexico since the border towns did play a big part in the American West. Back then a lot of people didn't care where the border was and moved freely across it.

Not true. Particularly in Meso-America and upper South America, some very impressive civilizations inhabited the American continent over the span of several millenia -- the Olmec, Moche, Maya (pre-classic, classic, and post-classic all being impressive), Zapotec, Teotihuacani, Mexica, and Inca to name a few. The most interesting/impressive north of Mexico, IMO is probably the Mississipian civilization (i.e. Cahokia), which unfortunately declined and fell before it ever came in direct contact with European powers.

As for this Old West map, Sovereign does have a point: what civilizations are you planning to put in such a scenario???

The original idea was basically to feature the native American tribes holding out against U.S. expansion. I would feature a choice of 8 of the largest native tribes of the time--Sioux, Comanche, Cheyenne, Nez Perce, Arapaho, Apache, Blackfoot, Navajo. The U.S. would be a non-player nation with much superior technology and manpower. In fact, by the usual Civ3 standards of measuring strength, it would be almost impossible to win in the conventional sense.

Some of my information comes from the Avalon Hill boardgame Geronimo--the relative tribal strengths, leaders, etc. I had abandoned this for awhile because I've found it hard to find historical information on resource location.
