What does the concept of an avatar mean to you?

Perhaps it represents your mood, perhaps it represents what you want to be, or perhaps something else?

Example #1:

When I see a pretty young lady in an avatar, my first reaction is "this person wants me to go easy on them"

Example #2:

When I see a comical cartoon character I feel it represnts the members personality. Normally good humoured.

Example #3:

When I see images of war machines or weaponry I get the impression that the member has strong nationalist views and will be easy to work up ;)

Example #4:

I suppose it's fair to say what I see when I see my own avatar. It's a shield over a flag. The shield is supposed to represent me(it's not 100% accurate), and it shows that I will protect that flag. I probably don't do a good job of that but at least I know that I mean well ;)

Other threads like this have concentrated on explaining your own avatar so I would like to put emphasis on what do you see in other people's avatars and does it affect your behaviour?

Well, my current avatar represents my pride for Canada, so much so that I have "touched" up the flag, taking out that nasty white, added a spiffy new leaf, etc.

And besides, it looks cool!!!

I don't think anything of avatars unless they are of the civ leader of that nation, in which case it is a pretty good guess taht they are nationalistic or at least moreso than the average guy, same with flags.

When someone's avatar is of a face (or some other sort of animate object) I semiconsciously imagine that that face is the face of the user, and is talking to me. That is, unless the face is of a hot woman, in which case I just assume the user is horny. ;)

Other than that, I don't assume much from avatars, but I do note when they're cool/pretty. ;)

Now idea what my avatar would symbolize :hmm:

My avatar symbolizes a Mad Scientist like in my title. I just like the Mad Scientist cliche.

Moi aussi.

I think my opinions on posters are not directly linked to their avatars, though they can be affected (ie. a person with a peace sign as an avatar will probably be labeled a hippie by myself ;)).

I don't really form opinions of personalities, mainly because I don't get most avatars. At most it will tell me about your sense of humor or interests.

Mine, for example, shows that I like radiohead and have a sense of humor about Cheney. ;)

I think I'll change mine, I'm getting tired of the partisan. I know it has been the trademark for my posts for so many years (about two and a half...) Don't try and stop me.

The recent proliferation of avatars of well known public figures with photographical realism have an impact on me.

Eg I find it difficult to get to the real cgannon faced with VP Cheney (who elicits a negative response from me) and the same applies to the face of Rumsfeld with S*N*.

On the other hand, a female face is attractive and the immediate response is positive. Of course the seasoned poster will be able to gauge the persons very much by the content and the threads they post in.

Well, he used to open every show by riding in on a Harley...

My avatar of course, is my hero since childhood. All Hail Barbibul!

Well Cgannon, I liked better your former avatar. :)
It represented your good taste in Art pictures (which is not the case of your current one). :D

Mine represents my nickname (Ice), my sign (Scorpion) and my name (E(yal) P(eer)).
I might change that to the sign of the military unit I'm getting recruited to soon.

Hey, I like the new one! Besides other people started using the partisan too.

I wonder what people thin of my avatars...
