How shall we deal with Tribute Demands from the New Continent

How should we respond to tribute demands from Civs on the new continent?

We have met Persia, and they know the Aztecs, Zulu and Iroquois. Unfortunately we are weak to Persia, and we don’t yet know about the new Civs:

The strength of us to our neighbours is as follows:
We also have something Persia and the other Civs will want - namely our contacts. These contacts are the key to our trade deals between the 2 continents. If we decide not to trade them, it is likely that they will demand them from us. If we refuse, as they are stronger than us, it will probably lead to war. If they do declare war, remember – at the moment they need suicide galleys to get to us!

So what do we do?

Our instructions concerning the previously know Civs are:

Tribute Demands: Reject all tribute demands from Russia unless the demand is trivial (10 gold or less and/or a territory map). From other countries, pay all tribute demands that do not exceed 40 gold or 2 gpt or that include technologies, cities, or contacts. If the demand exceeds 40 gold, 2 gpt, or includes contacts, techs, or cities, reject the demand.

Refuse all from them.
This does mean, if war is declared upon us by one of them, we do need a quick-reactionairy-force consisting of horsies or knights.

Refse all, build a naval fleet and kill them at sea. They cant fight a good war with us cross continentally.

Russian style. what are they going to do? the AI atinks at cross-continent war, no reason to give in to thier pathetic, self-centered demands

I agree, there isn't any point in accepting those demands. If a war starts, they can't attack us with any speed or force, and we could start a war on their continent with a MA against them.

EDIT: We may want to be a bit more cautious for those nations that have built cities on our continent, such as Egypt.

Refuse all demands from the Civ. Even if it results in having them declare war on us when they get our "NO!"

This poll was specifically looking at responding to Civs on the New Continent who are currently suicide galleys away ie: Persia, Astecs, Zulu and Iroquois. Egypt and Greece I was including with our previously known Civs under the present instructions.
