Well my thought is: There had better be irrigation.

[As a side note for anyone new we just tried AWE with no irrigation and no resources and got munched:

The terminally ill game that finally died

Barbslinger, Add a note to the old game with a link to this game to make it easier to find.

Whew, your right! I was so excited pulling that on the first try when I thought it would be a while until I found a good one. If we see that we can't irrigate I can re-roll the start. Ther should be water though. We near the middle.

Cuivienen, you're in!

Moonsinger and Dianthus have a wicked utility for rolling starts. You plug in the parameters for a start you want... food bonuses, shields, rivers even domination limit. Set it running for a couple of hours and it generates lots of starts, just keeping the qualifying ones (with a picture). You can then choose the start you want.

For this game, I would do this.

You can find the utility in the Hall of Fame thread. Highly recommended. :)

This isn't a signup, its a bit beyond my level, but good luck guys and I think after the last attempt you are going to need it :D

Hey Slinger!

I'm in. But about that start ... unless we have some fresh water, we don't actually have bonus food there in Despotism. Even with the Seafaring bonus food in the city tile, he city will max out at size 6! Kind of convenient since it can't grow larger than that before Construction anyway. Shields are another matter. At size 6 the city can pull 11 spt in Despotism.

Welcome Cuivienen, Yoshi :)

TMcC, I think we can grow past size 6 using the sea squares.

Even if our capitol is dry we should be ok if we can build a good second city for expansion. Barbslinger, we can see what the situation is after you play to 3000BC.

We seem to have our 6 (Yom said he definitely wanted to play in the other thread, so hopefully he will check in soon).

Welcome Yoshi!

I'll make 2 warriors first for a circular exploration of about a ring 7 area. Then it really depends on what I see. WE start with CB and Alpha so I'll be max on pottery. Hopefully we can trade alpha for something nice when we meet up with someone.

Yeah, hopefully the Seafaring trait will be of some use. Alphabet is the most valuable starting tech.

It looks like there might be grassland across the mountains, which may have a river :goodjob:

No river and this will be Babylonian Rampage Redux.

Checking in.

That looks like a nice start, except for the lack of fresh water. Let's hope we can get some to the capital and that the rest of our lands aren't hills and plains.

Edit: It looks like Madrid will be a good city for military production with all those shields. Maybe we should look for a really fertile spot for our second city as a settler and worker producer more than military (for an AW start though, the high shields are nice for early production but bad for expansion).

The bonus units do make it tougher, but a well planned archer or swordsman rush can be very effective if we find limited opponents. I suggest we do NOT explore far for this very reason. If we can meet only one civ we may be able to do substantial damage or destroy it. As soon as we meet two then it is not going to be an option.

The 5CC AW Meli1 has such a start. We kill France very early can turn on india and then Maya for a fairly easy clearing of our home continent. That is only Monarch, but the principle applies (Its just more restricted).

Wow, I read your previous AWE attempt and nearly fell out of my chair with laughter when I read about that late-game push to get the iron. Incredible and improbable! The fact that you were able to even obtain those resources should be seen as a victory.

I look forward to lurking in on this one.

4000BC - Madrid founded on the spot. Worker moves to road wine. Pottery in 15 at 90%. Warrior in 4 to look for water S. 2 other wines show up. I’m roading the wine for gold because the cow with gold gives same benefit with road. * Hitting head * Citizen won’t be working wine it will be working cow. Also, I spot the edge of a river to the south. Need the water.
[1] 3950 –
[2] 3900
[3] 3850
Warrior 1 completes. Road to wine completes. Roading towards river.
[4] 3800 – warrior1 heads S on road. Worker S road and then to river. Don’t want to bring irrigation through 2nd wine because that should be mined.
[5] 3750 – worker1 roads. Warrior 1 S
[6] 3700 – warrior 1 W.
[7] 3650 – warrior 1 W, staying close to home.
IT - warrior 2 produced. Set to Brax for granary.
[8] 3600 – Worker to river to begin irrigation. War1 NW. War2 on top of worker. Warrior 1 takes a chance and gets on hill. Nothing to see here. Go home.
[9] 3550 – Irrigating. War1 homebound. War2 fortifies on worker.
[10] 3500 – War 1 back towards home.
[11] 3450 – zzzz.
[12] 3400 – War1 takes road and heads E to mountain range to take a peek.
[13] 3350 – Irrigation completes. Worker heads back to irrigate on end of road. War1 E on mountain sees plains. War 2 S ONE time to scout next city location. Theres a cow there. Pottery next turn at lower science.
[14] 3300 – Irrigating. War1 N on mountain sees grassland wheat. War2 onto mountain. Swap to granary in 10.
[15] 3250 – War2 heading home peeking over mountain fringe. War1 NE onto grass.
[16] 3200 – War 1 on tp of grass wheat. Nice 2nd city? I don’t see water though.
[17] 3150 – War 1 E to shore. Could we be on a peninsula?
[18] 3100 – Worker irrigates home wine, next he goes to cow. War2 on top of him. War1 S and then circling home.
[19] 3050 – War 1 S. War 2 fortifies on worker.
[20] 3000 – War 1 SW.

We need to get to settling, hopefully soon. What looked like a good start is hampered by lack of water again. Things should pick up on growth with the irrigation being home. Hopefully no contact for the next 60 turns or so. HaHa

Doesn't looks too bad. Not the fasted start possible, but compared to your babylon game this looks quite promising. Loots of hills, mountains for iron and plains and grassland for horses :)
Lets hope we don't have to many expan. neighbours. And no one too close at all.
