I was wondering if anyone else has ran into this problem......

On my latest game I was the Americans, Monarch difficulty, version 1.15b. Spain had been ahead of me in tech for most of the game. They got space flight before me, and by the end of the game they had EVERY tech researched. At some points they were 4 techs ahead of me..... Yet they NEVER started on their spaceship?

Anyone know why this is? And yes, I had space race victory enabled, in fact thats how I finally ended up winning. I built all 10 parts of the SS before Spain had built their first 1, even though they had ALL techs and ALL resources.... They had like 10+ ICBMs, so why would they never build ONE space ship part?

Ok I uploaded the save. Anyone have any explanation for this, or can point out something I've missed? Seems to me like they could have gone for a space race victory, but just decided to never try and build the Apollo Program..... Whats up with that?

Sounds weird. What version is the save?

Is Spain embroiled in a long war? Sometimes the AI will not build SS parts when it is focused on units for war.

Its version 1.15. They were involved in a pretty long war, but that keeps them from building ANY spaceship parts? Hmm I didnt know that. You'd think with all their cities they could find a few to build at least a few parts. :( I did..... :p

Are you sure you had space victory on?

Yea, thats how I won the game. If you download that save, on the very next turn I win by Space Race Victory, so I'm 1000% sure it was turned on. :p

I dont know, but this was my first Monarch game so I was really expecting it to be a lot harder than it was.

Imagine my suprise when the Spanish were 4 techs ahead of me and STILL hadnt started on their spaceship. I was upset and relieved at the same time.

The uploaded save file appears to have a problem, I get a zero length file when I download it.

I wonder if Spain had mobilized for the long war? That could explain what happened...

Hmm not sure if they were mobilized or not. I read somewhere that you can still build spaceship parts even if you are mobilized, is that not true in C3C?

Is the saved game screwed up for everyone? Or have some been able to d/l it? I see its been downloaded 3 times......

They may have been missing some resources.

Nope, if you download the save you can see they have everything, and have had everything for a looooooooong time. They have 10+ ICBMs. If you can build ICBMs you can also build Apollo and some spaceship parts.

I tried to DL it earlier today and got an error - couldn't open file. Since then I upgraded to v1.22 and tried to DL and open again (before you posted the version number) -- same error. So I am 2 of those 3 downloads and couldn't open it under 1.15.

Let me zip it and try it again.

Does this work?

Its named Subbug because you can see the sub bug very easily in the same save. I guess I should have named it something else for this thread to avoid confusion, but oh well. :p

The SAV in the zip file loads in 1.15 so I think it is ok now.

I've played with the SAV a a bit and have a theory - I'm guessing that Spain's problem is related to mobilization.

What I tried first was to mobilize America and then see if any spaceship parts could still be built. At least one (stasis chamber) can be built while mobilized, so that's not the problem.

Then I reloaded, abandoned Atlanta ("the Americans have destroyed our spaceship" ) and checked whether Apollo Program could be built. Answer is yes as expected since it is a small wonder.

I then mobilized again and aha, while mobilized Apollo Program can NOT be built.

Finally I used your treasury to investigate about eight Spanish cities. They're all producing things which can be built while mobilized - seems fairly likely that she is mobilized.

So I guess there's a bug here, it seems that the intention was to allow spaceship builds while mobilized, and Apollo Program should also be allowed. But isn't. Seems to also present an exploit though - mobilize before space race, prebuild battleships or whatever for spaceship components to build them faster. Nasty.

Can't you tell directly whether they're mobilized from the shield count?

Edit: I loaded the save, and investigated a couple Spanish cities - no sign of extra shields from Mobilization (neither on city map, shield total or estimated turns). However, if I put the Americans into Mobilization, I don't see any production differences either (except I can't build civilian stuff). What am I missing?

Silly me, you're right! I've checked again and it seems that Spain is not mobilized. You can get faked out and not see the extra shields depending on what is being built. I investigated the Carthage cities as a cross-check and in their second city you can see that they are mobilized.

So my theory isn't looking great. Except, a long shot perhaps, it looks like Egypt was destroyed very recently in the game. RX2000, do you have a save from a bit before Egypt's destruction to check whether Spain was mobilized at that date?

maybe she is building them in a small city, and then it will take like a 100 turns?

No sorry SirPleb, the only other save I have is an autosave 3 turns before, and I had already taken over the last Egyptian city. :(

Thanks for your ideas on this problem though!

Without looking at the save, that seems pretty obvious to me - if Spain is building only Military stuff right now, it's quite likely they were mobilized until recently.

But that is not exactly a bug, but questionably design - several small Wonders don't have the MIL flag checked; nothing you notice normally, but in the WW2 Conquest you cannot build the Heroic Epic when mobilized (it's called 'History of WW2' here, but otherwise identical). Ugly when playing China, since they must mobilize.
