More viable and more complex and sophisticated forms of government

Note: I already posted the same posting in another subforum, but I think it fits here well, too.


For Civ4, there should be much more twists and specialties of various governments.

Right now we have:

Despotism -> nobody's choice, just the starting gov
Anarchy -> well...

Republic - Democracy -> Governments with war weariness and increased commerce

Monarchy: The Warmonger Government vanilla edition
Communism: Has some specials, but is in line with Monarchy in general

Feudalism, Facism: The latest additions were rather specialized, where Facism has a hard time against Communism (IMO), and Feudalism is - as we already discussed - very special.


There could be many forms of government for Civ4, perhaps some better for various nations, "favored" government in a way that is much more than the current form of "favored" govs in Civ3.

How about special boni for unit construction of certain types, e.g. faster defence unit production, faster attack unit production, special type of unit ( (Civ-)Fanatic ? perhaps) and so on. Or increased trade bonuses that are somewhat more sophisticated than extra commerce on each tile, science boni or mali and well... a lot of ideas that would need a lot of balancing, but I always feel I have too few real choices when I play Civ3 right now.

This could be much more interesting in Civ4.
 
I definately agree with this. I'd love to see more detailed governments with more differences, in Civ4
 
What would those governments be? It's not much help to say that we need more. What are you suggesting? What governments and what effects (and what effects would the already implemented ones have?). It seems like a good idea, but perhaps something more concrete would be appropriate?
 
I cannot come up with a whole system of governments right now, I might add some more concrete ideas later.

To Longasc: Well, to give you ideas about the new ways governments could affect your civilization, I believe you should look at the 'province' idea for some help with that. I wrote things about it a while ago, and provinces could easily help give governments flavor. In ones such as despotism, you have more total control, while in others, like city-states, the provinces are really more independant, with you as a kind of overseer for times of war etc. Modern democracies with strong federal AND state [provincial] governments would be another type, and feudalism would follow from city-states, and communism from there, and monarchy from despotism, and fascism from there. Republic and democracy could be their own type, as well, with benefits to both you, and the provinces.

i think there should be a left right slider (like the luxury sliders etc.) so that you can alter your commerce/production speed etc. without an entire revolution. however big changes would need a new government so a revolution.
this would represent different governments being voted into a democracy/republic/communism?? or different leaders coming to power in despotism/monarchy/fascism/communism???
