Roster: (full)

I'd like to play this on vanilla or PTW... for some reason I like them a little more than C3C...

Civ could be the Zulu, or Mongolia.

PTW, please. Still can't get vanilla to run. CD key seems to have gone missing on my game machine.

Go random and PTW. Take the first roll. I want a challenge.

I remembered that you had vanilla problems, Bede so I was prepared to PTW.

And all random, except map size is Standard. Rules are default, except that culture-linked starts and AI respawning are off.

I'll start the game soon.

We start as the Arabs.

And we also get a nice start. :) I think I'll go for the river.

4000BC [PRETURN]: Nice start we get. I decide to move the scout E, then E again.

Settler Also to East, to get to the river.

Worker pops the hut and we get Bronze Working! :D

I think I'll go for Mysticism @ min science.

3950BC [1]: Move scout SW, we see a cow. Scout S, we spot another cow! :yeah: Because of that, the Settler moves S.

3900 [2]: Settle Mecca, and we see a third cow that's inside the 21! [dance] Mecca starts scout.

mecca.jpg

The current scout is named Konkari.

3850BC [3]: Konkari spots silks East of Mecca.

3800BC [4]: Scandinavians ahoy! We spot a settler/warrior pair just beside the silks! They must be nearby.

3700 [6]: The Vikings settle Copenhagen just beside Mecca!...

We get Warrior Code from a hut.

3650BC [7]: Mecca builds scout, and I wonder a while on what to build, but decide to build a warrior as the Vikings are so close.

The new scout gets the name Jabba.

3500BC [10]: I should pay more attention...Mecca riots. :wallbash:

3400BC [12]: Mecca builds the warrior, and I start a Granary, we'll get a nice settler factory out of this. :)

3150BC [17]: We spot the Spanish East of Scandinavia. They've got Masonry and Alpha, we have WC.

3000BC [20]: We pop a hut and get 25 gold. I hope I didn't mess up with the turns, as my starting plays aren't that good...:undecide:

There's a barb squatting beside Mecca. Next better player can decide what to do with him.

Bede - UP!
pindicator - on deck
conehead234
Rik Meleet
Ankka - just played

REMEMBER: 24h to post a got it, 48 total to complete the turns.

Oh, and the save.

Wow, now that's a start I wish I could have gotten on some of my games! Well, except for the barbs, of course. People all over the world will do pilgrimage to Mecca, if only to see how great of a city it will be.

After seeing the Vikings so close I might have tried to pop out a settler before the granary, but then again, with the barbs that might not have worked out too well either.

I noticed that you didn't mention any trades. Is that because you are hoping to find more civs before trading, or just because you didn't see any deals that seemed fair?

Edit: I'm not running XP, so what utility do I need to open a .w3g extension file?

Got it.

Cows for the workers and cowhides for shoes for the workers.

That's the way it is. They started with a boatload of settlers.

Enough about the present; let's focus on the future.
Problems:
- Mecca will grow in 1: unhappyness.
- Not very good lands near Mecca to settle.
- Copenhagen right on our doorstep.
- No obtainable luxes nearby.
- Barbarians.

Partly Solution: follow the river. Settle there. Try to scout South of our lands ASAP. Get a coastal-city for curraghs and find a good island. This is going to be hard.

Up the river it is.

And not being on the coast the Vikings won't be coming at us from the water.

Playing now.

This brings up a good point: When will we be going to war with the Vikings? Is a good horsemen or swordsmen assault out of the question (barring we have horses or iron--[knocks on wood])? I assume that we will be going to war with them at some point during the AA / early-IA because they have all the good lands, and we probably don't want to get stuck with the sub-par lands we have for expansion. I'm going to guess that the Vikings will probably even snatch some good river spots from us, too.

This isn't an immediate problem, but it's something related to some of the points that Rik Meleet brought up.

Hehe, now I'm waiting for Bede to play in both SGs I'm in :)

3000BC
There are no good choices in this situation. Attacking with the warrior could cost the unit, then the granary and meanwhile the city riots. Shifting to an archer or spear won't finish in time.

Press enter with a firm grip on the worry beads.

And the worst happens. The warrior dies and the granary is destroyed. And of course Mecca riots once the MP is gone

T1 2150
Jabba scurries away from approaching barbarians. Mecca starts another warrior. Konki climbs a hill and spots a barb encampment and another border. ENtertainment tax goes up to 30%

T2 2900
Jabba meets China

He'll offer Masonry for 100g It is too rich for me as there is no one to buy it from us. His offer is the best, though.

Konki scurries away from Goth towards border which belongs to Scandanavia.

T3 2850
Mecca gets its MP back and starts an archer. Konki spots a village.

T4 2800
...and we get a ville on the eastern side of Scandanavia in the desert between two little saltwater bays. It will be good for unit support until we get our second town. Build a warrior and a worker, then abandon.

The Chinese and the Vikings are conducting unit advancement exercises on the Mauryan camps in the neighborhood so there is a steady stream of refugees coming our way.

T5 2750
Exploring

T6 2710
Mecca builds an archer and starts a settler due in 4 with growth in 4.
Konka meets the Americans east of Medina.

T7 2670
Explore some more and find Chinese southern border

T8 2630
Iron working is known to all but Spain who has Alphabet and Masonry, and Ragnar doesn't know his letters yet. So trade Ragnar150G + 2gpt for IW. Then trade IW +5gpt to Spain for Alphabet, Masonry and 10g. Then trade Alphabet to Ragnar for the Wheel and 110g and The Wheel back to Isabella for 19g + 1gpt. As a result we are at tech parity with all and up Alphabet on Mao who has no money and the Treasury is about where it was when I started (141g+2gpt with Masonry due in 14).

(Got so excited with all the horse trading forgot to take pictures)

Scouts running from barbs (east) and checking out China (north).

There is iron in the hills along the river to the NE

T9-T10 2550
Waiting for settler to finish and exploring.
Mecca finishes settler starts warrior. Just as settler finishes the Chinese and Vikings herd a Mauryan right in front of him.
Regular archer whacks the Mauryan and promotes so settler follows.

Have fun

Proposed next settlement, on a hill and river with floodplains, leads to the iron and a floodplains wheat.

Note: we may not need to put a granary in Mecca for a 6 turn warrior/settler output. Haven't checked the numbers but with all the cattle and bonus grass lands I think it's possible.

Got it and will probably play it soon, as tonight is a free night.

Man, talk about your baptism by fire. Bede deserves a :goodjob: for mitigating things as well as he did. I hope my luck goes better.

How serious of a run should we make on the iron? It seems very unlikely that the Vikings or Chinese will ignore it for too long, especially since it has two furs near it. The river is as good a spot as any to settle, and we probably won't get to this during my course of turns. However, to our south is a horse, and considering our UU, we may want to claim the horse as well, maybe even before we win/lose the iron push.

I like the hill settle location and will aim for that. I don't think there is too much else that needs to be said, so I'll wait a bit for discussion and then play.

Edit: For the 6-turn warrior/settler factory I believe we are one shield short as-is.

Turn Shields Food
1. (6/10) (7/20)
2. (10/10) (14/20) --IBT warrior completes
3. (7/30) (6/20) --MM BG to forest for extra shield; grows IBT
4. (14/30) (7/20)
5. (21/30) (14/20)
6. (29/30) (20/20) --MM BG to forest again.

Once the worker mines a BG, we'll have it. I'm curious why you chose that particular BG to work. It's on the other side of the river, and there is an equally good one only one turn away (saving worker turns to move to the spot).
