It all started in 4000BC - like all other games by the many here. A Chinese settler with a worker found themselves in a world, unknown and unexplored. Were there any other life out there? What was install for them? They were eager to know and so the settler decided to found a city on the very spot.

A pretty good spot - river, two spices, a good hut and a mountain of gold. But there were jungles and marshes in the vicinity. What did this signify? Was the jungles and marshes ever stretching.

A warrior was being trained and soon sent out for scouting. The worst fear was answered. The jungles and marshes did strecth, all the way to the very eastern part where the Mongols resided. North of the capital Beijing was the desert. The more fertile land in the North-West was resided by the Japanese.

By this time, I had decided that I'll not be able to compete culturally or effectively as a builder in this Monarch level of game. I opted for ICS and shoot straight for Feudalism since I want the big feudal army quick!

In the beginning, the Mongols and the Japan led the tech race but I was able to keep up by trading. I met the Indians South West of Beijing and South of Mongols' Karakarum. The Indians were behind in tech and I wanted to sell them my tech to gain gold. But they were very poor. So they were left alone to be uncivilized. Later, I met the Koreans north of Mongolia. And further my warrior went to the east of Korea, I found the Babylon on another island, a bout two tiles from my continent.

At this time, I began to wonder, wasn't this a pangaea map? I thought I set it to be a pangaea map. I thought there was another land route to the Babylons, but I didn't find it for quite some time.

As expected, those AIs got those wonders pretty much up when I was just feeling enough of expansion and ICS-ing. Japan was the major culture power house here and they had the Pyramid, The Great Library, The Great Wall and The Great Lighthouse. And some unknown Sumerian got themselves the Hanging Gardens and Oracel while Indians settleed for Temple of Artemis. Another unknown Spainish built the Collosus.

I began to build my army but I found out that I was horseless. I started on warrior and upgraded them to swordmen. I was still about one tech away from feudalism and I decided not to go to war first with the Mongols. Wanting to kill the mongols first might proof to be fatal later in the game - you'll see why. As I was teching for Feudalism, Japan already had Mongol downed to about 5 cities. I joined in the fun with Med. Infantry once I got Feudalism and changed my goverment to Feudalism. I took Tatu and Karakarum while the Japanese took the rest. And that, the Japan-China coaliation dusted the Mongols.

Next, even thought I shared such a bond with the Japanese, I hated them alot. They were flipping my cities left and right. I lost Kaifeng and New Tsingtao to them. I wanted to make my move on them, since they had the fertile land and also those great wonders. I was stacking med inf, remember no horses for me, when the stupid Indians came to me and declared war.

My Chinese people were amazaed with warriors sitting ontop of elephants. Initially, I lost a few spearmen. But I quickly roped in the Japanese, once again my trusty ally, to help me beat down the Indians. This time round, I found out that Japanese didn't have iron. I sold them iron for horses and a gpt deal. I was making over 200 gold per turn with luxury set at 0% and science 10%.

I didn't want to race ahead in the tech anymore since I am in Feudalsim with a huge unit support. War was in my mind. Furthermore, I was still trying to clear those jungles and marshes for productive cities.

With the imported horses from Japan, Chinese Riders poured into the Indians land. Indus then Calcutta and finally Delhi fall to the Chinese. The bonus was the Temple of Artemis in Delhi. With that, I quickly relocate my tech path to Metallurgy so that education would not kick in and render it useless. I needed the free temple alot to avoid cities flipping again.

Suddenly, the Koreans declared war on Japanese and Japan was then fighting at two fronts. I had no idea why Japan keep pouring units into India and that tones of Koreans knights and Ancient Cavalry from the Statue of Zeus failed to even bring down one of the Japanese cities. They were pouring in to Shimonoseki, Almarikh and New Tsingtao. I saw at least one leader being created in that war over there.

Then news came that Babylonians were wiped out.

Neeway, I decided it was time to end the Indian life and they were wiped out from the planet. I planned to build the Forbidden Palace in Delhi as the second city core when I switch out of Feudalism, preferably Democracy and stop being a war monger.

I wanted to take out the Japanese then provided that the Koreans were fighting them and hogging the Japanese at another front.

The proposed attack route was from Shantung to Satsuma and New Shanghai to Edo and Xin jian to recapture the lost Kaifeng.

However, I didn't have the forces I felt good enough for the task. I needed a lot more Riders and the iron for horse deal with the Japanese was extended. Korean couldn't provide me with horses. This time, I had exchanged world map with the Japanese. Considering I didn't send out galley, the Japanese world map was more complete than mine. Then, I saw the Spainish and Sumerian. Not really nice people and they were behind in a few techs. They were poor, so I didn't sell them anything.

Korea and Japan signed a peace treaties about 4 turns before the iron for horse deal expire. Once the deal expired, I demanded technology, horses from the Japan. They didn't give in. They became furious and I asked them to move their troops away from my territory. They declared war! How wonderful that was...

I moved my stacked riders and med inf and trebuchets in to strike Satsuma and Edo. I manage to capture both Satsuma(with Leonardo Workshop) and Edo. My next target was Kyoto and then sign a peace treaty. However, the unthinkable happened, I began to lose cities east of Beijing. Paoting, New Nanking, New Xinjian and others were falling even though I had at least 4 musketmen per city. The Japanese were coming in with longbowmen. I couldn't believe it. How the hell was gunpowder losing to arrows?!

*refer picture 002

Furthermore, this is the first time I am seeing the AI actually destroy my road to iron and saltpepper. I had 2 irons and 2 saltpepper, each was sold for the military alliances and now, I can't make musketmen nor riders anymore even though I took Bombay from Japan which had horse.

My attempt to take Nagoya from Kaifeng failed miserably and was pushed back by samurais. I decided I need to roped in the Koreans, Spainish and also the Sumerians for this.

So that was when I decided to write this...

I didn't make the exact account for all events as I didn't really planned to write this to begin with. Neeway, I think I am in a deep poo-poo now as I've roped in everyone to fight the war for me and couldn't sign a peace treaty with Japan and break my reputation.

Below are some other screen shots.

Because I was losing so many units to the Japanese, my unit count dropped to 100. :(

I wonder why the Spain and Sumeria has the same color, now I don't know who is who...

Ummm, I think I can upload all the pictures to civfan server... but i could say, arrange the pictures in the way i wanted, that's why i am temporary putting them on my own server... anyone can help me with this?

1340AD~1500AD

So the story continued. The last time when I left the game was when I felt I was in a deep poo-poo. There wasn't really any sign of sunshine in the feudal land of China. The musketmen were not doing well against the Japanese longbowmen. Losing two musketmen to every one Japanese longbowmen that came to take the cities of Paoting, Tatu, Tatung and Kaifeng. Though the lost of Paoting was a terrible blow after New Nanking, the gallant Chinese Musketmen held their stand. Chinese riders from Kaifeng decided to charge towards Paoting. By doing so, several longbowmen were dropped dead and Paoting was recaptured.

News came to the Chinese that Spain and Sumerian had sign peace treaty with Japan. That was indeed a great news for the Chinese. This would allow the Chinese to end the war sooner than expected. All that left was Korean who was still in the alliance against the Japanese. Year 1365, the Korean signed a peace treaty with the Japanese. There by giving the Chinese the opportunity to quickly end the war with the Japanese without having to break the reputation. Having both Satsuma and Edo and several Indian cities including Bombay, Karachi and Bangalore, that Japanese took before was more than enough for losing New Nanking and New Xinjian. The treaty was signed with Japan giving the Chinese 26 gold and territory map on year 1370. The Japan refused to give in any technology which was kindda sucky.

It was then decided that the Forbidden Palace was to be built in Delhi, the old India capital, by using the leader to hurry production. Other cities began to replenish the lost units while the cities surrounding Delhi were ordered to build marketplace followed by courthouse to reduce corruption and allow an effective core to function. This was done in consideration that the area is particularly secure and far from the border of Japan. War units will be poured out from the old capital region in preparation for another massacre.

Since Korea, Spain and Sumerian broke the military alliance, the Chinese iron and saltpeter that were exported were returned. This had allowed the continuation of training riders and musketmen. Previous spearmen and pikemen were upgraded. Riders were pouring out. Science was at 10% and luxury was reset back to 0% returning an almost 200 gold per turn value.

Everything was going smoothly when the year 1380 came. The people of Edo deposed the Chinese governor and pledge their loyalty back to their mother land, the Japan thinking that the Japanese culture was better. A deep blow into the Chinese people pride. The capture Edo was gone. This was certainly a revenge in the mind of the Chinese. Not wanting to break the peace treaty deal, the Chinese kept that hatred in their heart and kept on training more riders.

Year 1390, Korea came offering Monarchy for 440 gold. The Chinese took it with delight. The Chinese chairman however was pondering, should the Chinese over threw the current Feudalism and switched to Monarchy by declaring himself the Dragon Emperor? The very verdict was that Chinese should be kept under Feudalism as the huge army would be unbearable for a monarchy. The previous war and 10% science research rate had already put the Chinese backward and catching up in technology was important. So, in feudalism the Chinese stayed.

(Was that a good move? I really don't know. It's a gamble I am really taking. I had too many under size 6 cities. Switching to Monarchy will result in a BIG drop of supported units and that would really be heavy on my vault. What I was thinking then was to quickly get to communism and get the Secret Police Headquarter in the Japanese land, preferable Tokyo which is north of Kyoto. That would really give me a three core empire and strike deep into Korea which the huge army I could have. Winning with culture is not in question now.)

Year 1395 saw that the Japanese army of longbowmen were fortified in the Chinese land, just outside the cities of Kaifeng, Paoting and Tatu. The Chinese didn't want to risk another unwanted war by telling the Japanese to leave, so they were left there. But the nerves were growing deeply in the Chinese mind.

Year 1400 saw the trade of wines and saltpeter for silks, furs and a 5 gold per turn deal with the Sumerian. The extra luxury brought a lot of happiness to the war wearied land of Chinese. "We love the Chairman" day was celebrated throughout the empire.

By year 1415, the Chinese had managed to reconnect the pillaged road to the extra iron and saltpeter while metallurgy was bought from Spain for the price of 640 gold and the Chinese world map. Year 1430, yet another prize possession of the Chinese that was took from the Japanese, was deposed by the people who thought that the Japanese had the better culture. This time, it was Satsuma. With that, the Chinese lost control of the "Leonardo's Workshop".
(Sincerely, this huge Japanese culture is killing me. The effect of the Temple of Artemis in Delhi for boosting a first culture ring expansion after 5 turns the city is conquered isn't helping. Though I had library built in Satsuma, generating 5 culture points per turn, it ain't helping. The Japanese capital Kyoto with its Pyramid, Great Library and Great Wall is killing me. No doubt, the next war will be taking down Kyoto. The first attempt failed as I still do not understand how a 4(2).1.1/1 longbowmen could kill my 4.2.3/3 riders so easily and breaking my musketmen defend.)

By year 1435, the Chinese realized the rest of the world were already in the industrial age. The Chinese was one age behind. This was not good for the Chinese. The Temple of Artemis gamble wasn't paying of and thus education was bought from Sumerian for 620g followed by astronomy for 790 gold. Navigation was bought from Spain for 540 gold along with the Chinese world map. The Chinese needed to catch up in tech fast since the 10% science gamble backfired and Japan didn't offer any tech during the peace treaty. It was a tech race now for the Chinese. How fast could the Chinese be on par again in tech with the rest of the world?

Year 1445 saw a tradeless year for Chinese. The best that the others could offer for 515 gold was music theory and world map. Chinese knew that a secondary tech should not be considered and that was it.

Year 1470, traded world map and 880 gold for physics from Sumerian.

Year 1480, traded world map and 730 gold for banking from Sumerian.

Year 1495, paid 590 gold for military tradition from Sumerian. Science set to 0% and was earning 215 gold per turn. The Chinese picked the Sumerian to be the receiver of Chinese gold because the Sumerian were on another island all by themselves. If the gold was paid to either Japan or Korea, that huge amount of gold for Chinese neighbors could mean trouble once the peace treaty expire. Chinese was now two techs away from industrial age. With military tradition under the Chinese knowledge, cavalry was possible and soon, all Chinese riders would be upgraded to cavalry while the cities start with cannons.

By year 1500, the Chinese had an army of 33 riders, 66 musketmen and others. A total of 117 units under the Chinese command out of 179 possible free units.

By this time, I had decided that I'll not be able to compete culturally or effectively as a builder in this Monarch level of game. I opted for ICS and shoot straight for Feudalism since I want the big feudal army quick!

kindda disappointed aren't you that it's not emperor or above?!

The End of Japan
1500AD~1772AD

The last time I left the game was back in year 1500AD. Just when I got back to the game, the Korea declared war on the mighty Chinese Feudal Empire. It was unexpected to begin with. The Chinese never expected the trusty Korea that balanced the power between the Chinese, Japanese and them on the continent would make such a move. This hinder the preparation for the assault on the Japan land by the Chinese forces. Quickly, the Chinese roped in the Japanese to an alliance against the Korea. The objective was to hold off Korea as long as possible with the minimum effort from the Chinese so that the feudal army would be ready for an all out attack against the Japanese as soon as possible. Japan did great wonder in diverting the Korea forces which was coming in from the choke point near Karakorum which the Japanese held as a prized possession taken from the Mongols centuries ago. As Japan declared war on Korea, both Karakorum and Kazan fell immediately to the Korea in year 1505. This signaled a great chance for Chinese to take that two cities for themselves without hurting its relationship with the Japanese for the time being. Year 1510 saw the Chinese successfully occupied both Karakorum and Kazan from Korea.

By year 1525, Spain was roped into the war with an alliance with Korea. The Chinese didn't care much about the Spaniard because it would take years for a single ship loaded with a few conquistadors. Even so, those conquistadors were no match for the superior Chinese cavalry. Year 1545 saw the purchased of Theory of Gravity from the Japanese for a cheap price of dyes and world map. Magnetism was also bought from Japan for 546 gold and a 28 gold per turn deal. However, Tokugawa didn't seemed happy with such a deal. Perhaps he already knew the secret plan that the Chinese was secretly brewing in their mind after the painful lost of Satusuma and Edo to his culture? That, however, should be solved in another few years or so, thought the Chinese.

Year 1550, Japanese and Korea signed a peace treaty. Chinese quickly followed suite in year 1555 with Korea and a deal for peace treaty was made. Chinese was willing to pay a hefty price of 371 gold and 140 gold per turn along with peace treaty for nationalism. Chinese needed nationalism badly which gave the option to build riflemen and upgrade existing musketmen. (Furthermore, in my previous game as the American, also Monarch, I didn't get nationalism fast enough and I was having a hard time fighting trying to protect my home land. That was a lesson well learnt. Furthermore, the final target for this game was to switch to communism and get that HUGE army to crush Korea and secure the whole continent for myself!) However, with a 140 gold per turn deal, it hurt the Chinese vault badly. The Chinese was earning a mere 40+ gold per turn since then. (The Korea is going to pay for this. Jot this down in "another of Chinese revenge!")

Year 1590, Sumeria came with an MPP and ROP offer for 18gpt. Many years followed and the Chinese calmly build up their military strength. Cannons and cavalries were trained to prepare for the secret war. Riflemen on the other hand took oath to protect the cities at all cost! The spirit were high, yet the time was not ripe! The Chinese waited and waited when year 1595 came. Beijing learnt that the Chinese could actually train a group of units to act as a body - an ARMY! Quickly, the Military Academy was ordered to be built. This time too, news came to the Chinese that the Japanese was still fighting a war with Spain. Hoards after hoards of Japanese riflemen, samurais, cavalry and longbowmen were seen boarding ships in Edo. This meant good news for the Chinese. While the Japanese were engaged in a war in another continent, leaving behind just a partial of its forces on the mainland, Chinese secret war plan was indeed looking good! As the preparation for the war continued, Delhi started to work on the Heroic Epic in memory of the victorious first army the Chinese ever had during the war with Korea half a decade ago. As the preparation went on, the MPP with Japan expired. The Japanese did asked for an extension, but the Chinese politely declined. Deep down, the Chinese were feeling pretty good that their secret war plan would work. A quick glanced at the city of New Xinjian of the Japanese saw at least 11 units of riflemen nearby. That was a blow to the Chinese. Certain rework of strategy need to be conducted and therefore, the secret plan was put on hold further a few more years. It didn't matter however, as the few years extra preparation would come in handy!

As the expired MPP with Japan settled down, a quick peace treaty was signed with Spain. However, no technology was able to be demanded from the Spaniard. Spain simply paid Chinese 3 gold. (I assured you, I was very disappointed with that. But Having just captured one Spain city,Victoria on my continent guess is not enough to give a good hard blow on the peace treaty.) As time went on, a quick glance at the Japanese empire saw that they had only one source of saltpeter near Hovd. That's excellent. Since the Chinese had troops position at Karakorum, it would be a major blow to the Japanese defense once the saltpeter was disconnected. So the battle plan was laid out once again, the first piriority was to disconnect the saltpeter and watch the numbered riflemen fell. The Chinese was certainly gleeful at this plan but would it really play into the hands on the Chinese? That was a question the Chinese really wondered and most scared of.

Year 1645, Chinese officially declared war on Japanese. Roping in Korea and Sumeria. At that point, Japan and Spain were still at war. Basically the whole world was against Japan. On the same year, the cities of Dacca and Bengal of Japan, which was taken from the Indian centuries ago, fell to the hand of the Chinese. Year 1650 saw the Japanese taking Tatung, Shantung and Kaifeng. A terrible blow instead. However, at that moment, saltpeter was disconnected and an army of cannons and cavalry reached Satsuma by 1655 and razed it to ground. It was the revenge that the Chinese hard endured for the past few many years. No longer would the Chinese city suffer the disgraceful act of being deposed for another rival's culture.

Chinese retook Shantung at 1655 but Shantung was lost again the very same year. Year 1660, Chinese retook Shantung and again it fell to the hands of the Japanese. Year 1670, Chinese retook Shantung once again and the Japanese invader were denied from it. However, the critical Tatung and Kaifeng were still in the Japanese' hands. Tatung was situated very near Beijing, the capital and a quick strike by the Japanese from Tatung could mean disaster! There were two options. Either quickly reinforced Beijing with a large numbers of riflemen or retake Tatung as soon as possible. However, the main attacking forces were too far from Tatung, therefore, others riflemen from nearby cities were sent to reinforced Beijing. Tatung shall be left to the Japanese while the main attacking force proceed to Edo and later Osaka before finally taking Kyoto the ultimate prize. Kyoto had the Pyramid, Great Library and Great Wall. Though expired and obsolete, they would boost the Chinese income as tourist attraction! On another note, year 1660 saw Victoria being deposed and joining the Spaniard. This however, didn't seemed to bear much hatred into the mind of the Chinese. Victoria was a small city by the coast of Chinese. It could be easily retaken and so it was left alone for then in focus of the war with Japan.

Year 1690, Tatung was retaken. However, near Havd, a single riflemen redlined my army of cavalry(15/15) to 1/15 and did not suffer a single decrease of hitpoint! It was unbelieveable! Year 1700, the army advanced to Edo and took it. A new leader was created on that day when Edo fell. Year 1705 saw the Japanese came offering for peace with Music Theory. The Chinese harshly sent off the Japanese envoy for that was not a deal the Chinese could take. It was more humiliation to the Chinese. The Japanese still wouldn't want to acknowledge the superiority of the Feudal Empire. They were the Fascist then. That very year also saw the fell of Almarikh to the hand of Chinese.

By year 1710, the Beijing Military Academy was completed. Year 1720, Osaka fell to the Chinese. Osaka was yet another prize for the war. Osaka had the Mausoleum of Mausollos and also the Great Lighthouse! More tourist attraction! Year 1725, New Nanking fell producing another leader. The war waged on, however, year 1752 saw the people of Osaka overthrowing the governor, pledging their alliance, once again to the Japanese. It was a deep blow. However, the main force was about one step away from capturing Kyoto. Cannons had been bombarding Kyoto for a few decades(turns) now and Kyoto was really weaken. By year 1760, Kyoto was taken and the Pyramid, Great Library and Great Wall came to the possession of the Chinese. The Chinese didn't want to stop. Why stop when you could get more? Greed was on the Chinese mind. The attacking forces moved on and took Izumo, Tokyo and all the way to Nagasaki leaving the poor Japanese with Sapporo on the main continent. Peace treaty was signed with Japanese and a 500 gold was paid in exchange for communism.

By year 1772, this was the new Chinese Feudal Empire possessing the prize land of Japan!

Ummm... I am beginning to wonder why Japan refused to give in other techs even i offered 1223gold(all my gold) when signing the peace treaty... did i not bash him hard enough or is AI at this level is notorious about giving techs?!

Another note which I forgot to mention... even though I saw that many units being sent abroad from Japan to Spain for their war, there were still many units in the Japan land. For example, there were at least 10 riflemen defending Kyoto, Izumo and New Xinjian. I really wonder how did the AI came out with such a large force. Korea did but little to distract the Japanese from my invasion. and i wonder too, when my city culture flipped, and i attack it the next turn, it was defended by TWO riflemen instead of one, how is that possible?! i thought it was suppose to be one best defender the civ could afford or am i wrong? but i do feel the hardship and uphill task fighting the bonuses the AI gets... :(

oops, i exceeded the bandwidth on my webserver that was hosting the images... guess, i'll be posting thumb nails pictures later when the bandwidth is restored...

drafted? mmmm... if it's drafted, i believe those riflemen would at conscript level, 2 hitpoints, but all of them were at least 4 hitpoints... i wonder why...*shrug*

i have finished the game, should be writing it later... see ya...

spoiler/sneak preview:
You've suffer an embarassing cultural defeat

-_-"

Tears in eyes, broken heart and a swollen emotion is what the Chinese is feeling right now. Mistakes, mistakes and many more mistakes were made. Unrecoverable, ruthlessly beaten and being shamed the Chinese was.

Back in 1772 when the Chinese celebrated their victory for wiping out Japan, they were secretly brewing another plan to take out the Koreans who were also sharing the continent with them. Sumeria was the receiver of Chinese gold before, however their greed was greater now and tech cost so much more. The Chinese couldn't handle it. Having not focused on cities' structures and facilities, the Chinese couldn't churn out enough gold to either bring the research to themselves nor to pay the Sumeria, Spain or Korea. That time, the Chinese knew that a majority off landmass and population on the world would bring them a domination victory - perhaps the only most viable route then. Fallen in tech, but strong in military was the gamble the Chinese was willing to take. The peace treaty with Japan didn't bring in the amount of tech the Chinese had hoped.

(At this point, I really wonder. Is it because I am playing Monarch that make tech so hard to be traded in a peace treaty? I thought I could extort almost every available tech back in regent. :confuse: *smack*smack* Gotta do that to remind myself that I am in Monarch now!!! :D )

The Chinese Feudal army was soon being introduced to communism in 1862 (after 8 turns of anarchy). Preparation was made, riflemen and cavalries were being churned out while the Secret Police Headquater made its way to Tokyo. Tech was bought one after another from Sumeria. When replaceable part was learnt, riflemen were being upgraded to infantries. Not having the gold to upgrade the 36 cannons to artilleries, the Chinese could wait no longer after 50+ years of peace. War was declared on the Korean. Sumeria and Spain were brought into the war with a MPP. Half of the Korean cities were razed while new Chinese settler took it. Peace was made but again, no tech could be extorted!

(A quick check on the victory status screen, the Sumeria were already building the spaceship. They had got 2 components built!! OMG!, They are that far ahead?! I just got replaceable part!!! That call for another fast strike to finish of the Korean and claim that 66% landmass!)

War was redeclared with Korean in risking a reputation hit and came the long waited artilleries. This time, Korean was totally wiped out from the map while Sumeria decided that Spain was a pain in his ass. Spain was later wiped out by the Sumeria.

(During those war, Sumeria being the UN secretary general, called for votes about three times. The first time when I was warring with Korea, I almost got a diplomatic victory. Spain voted for me, Korea abstain and of course I voted for myself. However, Sumeria voted for himself! Stupid stupid stupid... The other votes saw the Korean out of the world, Spain was somehow furious with me decided to abstain from vote. So well, there went my diplomatic victory...

Later, I got real fedup and wasted. I've got the whole continent, but it was just about 58% of the whole world land mass. If I want that 8% more, I would need to conquer an island somewhere. The problem was, I had no navy and productive port cities. Furthermore, I was stucked in replaecable part, no transport was buildable. Another check on the victory screen saw the culture of Sumeria reaching 100 000 in 3 or 4 turns and 9 spaceship components built!!!! I knew it was unwinnable since I was too far in getting ready to hit its capital Ur or stop its culture.)

Therefore, year 2028 saw the humiliating defeat of the Chinese to the Sumeria culture... :(

-----
After game analysis:

To me, Monarch was a new game level. I never expected the AIs to be so unwilling to part with tech when being bashed up. Thus, from the start when I began to set my research to 0% and take on a LONG war with Japan cost me too much. Furthermore, I had been feeding Sumerian with gold for tech which in turn helped them in gaing more tech and those pesky wonders. Both Spain and Korea and I were one age behind the Sumerian. Another thing, NAVY! I focused too much on land. Furthermore, I thought that by conquering the whole main continent, I could get that 66% of landmass needed for domination victory, but I failed. But oh well, guess I'll need to move on...

On the other hand, a consolation prize, I was labeled "Mao the Magnificient!"

Teehee!

hahaha, it looks like spain and sumeria merged into 1 civ, now that would be an interesting concept, civs merging (or unmerging) without war....

Bummer, dude, but that's why I tend to go for the Culturally strong (religious or scientific) Civs. If you'd have had at least 50,000 culture points yourself, then the only option for the Sumerians would've been with either 20K single city culture victory, diplomatic victory or finish the last two components of the SS. Also, ASAP, and corruption allowing, build temples in all your cities. Not only does the early culture jump keep them from flipping, but also keep those unruly, ingrate citizens happy.

Well, as far as losses go, that one isn't the worst I've seen. Imagine the humiliation of losing the space race by 1 frigging' turn (That was the first and last time I played Monarch in Vanilla Civ III. I just got tired of the insane bonuses that are equal and inversely proportional to your disadvantages at those levels.)

hikaro, in all my previous games, i didn't go on such long war. i had always been culturally strong and i would be flipping AI cities left and right, but not this time. i wanted to try a new play style and well, it cost me!

Well, that's usually what happens when one gets into never-ending wars. Even my friends who play the "loot, kill, pillage & burn" style only declare war long enough to grab a few cities and then go for peace, that is unless the enemy is weak enough, then they go for the whole monty, which usually prompts me to join them in a military alliance so that I can get a slice of the pie for myself, this is in Multiplayer, of course, I don't trust the AI's any further than I could throw 'em when it comes to MPP's or Military alliances.

I've found that war weariness and dragging your economy down for long-drawn out wars will kill you in the long run, regardless of what difficulty you play on (for good examples of this, go to the Sirian's Great Library, that guy only ever plays on Diety, and he used the same basic strategy when it comes to warfare).
