The original Civ 3 heads with an added badge (smiley face) indicating their mood. I find it makes getting a quick, exact count easier.

Blitz_1 helpfully posted a screenshot graphic in the post that follows this one.

For larger (15x15) badges, you can get them here (along with a screen shot):

I like it, especially at the Domestic Screen....now much easier to see.

Below is the screen from the zip file:

Nice, is it just me or did everyone look exactly the same before this patch?

 woo beer!!!!!

great mod, i like that it makes it easier to count, but (and trust me on this) you can't use green. green is the default color of all the popheads in the game, and Sid & Co. use a palette shifting technique to indicate that population is a different nationality. so, if you take over a blue civ's city, and look in your city screen, those little green smiley faces will actually be blue.

no green. green bad.

I tested it before releasing. I ran across the same thing and used a yellow-green that does not change.

If you look at the Domestic Advisor screenshot and look at the city of Madras, you will see there are some purple citizens. The color change in their hat does not affect the green of the mood badge.

I appreciate your warning though.

ahh.. good point.. nice to see that you found a green that doesn't color shift :)

can you post the rgb value of that shade?

thanks.

EDIT July 5, 2005: I made my own smiley set including for all the Conquests at http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=122958.

Now updated for Conquests!

I am spoiled to having these little mood badge smileys. Civ3 Conquests adds specialists, so the original smiley PopHeads won't work with Conquests. I decided to make the mod myself since no one else has yet. I found it surprisingly easy. The Conquests PopHeads.pcx is only taller by 50 pixels, all the original heads are the same and in the same positions, so all I had to do was carefully paste EvanCiv's PopHeads into the new Conquests PopHeads.

I even blantantly modified his ReadMe.txt with the new folder info and kept the old screenshot in the zip. But I acknowledge that this is other people's work that I've cut and pasted.

Here ya go: C3Cmoodbadge8x8simplesmiley.zip (266K zip)

(The file was too big to attach, so there's no download counter. Sorry.)

See above for screenshot. Use the version in EvanCiv's post above for vanilla Civ3 or PTW.

EDIT March 3 2005: This works for the "epic" game, but it appears the "Conquests" scenarios have their own popheads.pcx files. You *could* copy this c3c popheads file into the individual conquests folders and have it work, *but* it might mess up the ethnic or era feel of the scenario. The conquests popheads appear to be the same people, but for example in Mesoamerica everyone is native american, and in other conquests the people never look industrial or modern. So if you copied the smiley popheads into the conquests folder you'll get europeans and asians in Mesoamerica and modern citizens where they should be middle ages. Several of the conquests share popheads files, but none use the stock C3C epic pophead file (as compared by md5 signature): Sengoku has unique popheads; Mesoamerica has unique popheads; Napoleonic Europe and WWII in Pacific have identical popheads; 7 conquests have identical popheads: Age of Discovery, Ancient Treasures, Fall of Rome, Mesopotamia, Middle Ages, Rise of Rome and The Three Sisters.

I pasted the file into the right directory, renamed it and all, but it doesn't show the badges? Please help, I propably did something wrong...

I mean, the popheads are in- game totally normal, but the file is the correct new one, with the badges...?

Did you remove the original one? If so, did you look to see if you made any errors renaming it?

It is probably a simple mistake. Nothing to be worried about. ;)

Yes, I removed the original one. Yes, I double- checked the renaming. Well, I'll try it out again now as my comp has restarted several times...

BTW, it works fine in vanilla, the problem was in C3C...

I just found out why they didn't work: for some reason they don't work in the Conquests, while they do in a normal epic game...

So, they work fine for me. Thanks one more time! :goodjob:

Haven't downloaded it yet but I will definitely do it soon. Just one question: Is it possible that you can change the colours of the smileys in order to get some intuitively more adequate ones ;) . I am thinking about:

Resisting citizens - RED
Unhappy citizens - YELLOW
Indifferent citizens - WHITE
Happy citizens - GREEN

- or -

Resisting citizens - BLACK
Unhappy citizens - RED
Indifferent citizens - YELLOW
Happy citizens - GREEN

Let all the specialist turn blue or white (Collar)

This is just a suggestion :) :) :)
