Hello,

A new civi here, possibly asking a couple of dumb questions. :crazyeyes

Firstly, what type of game do I have ?

Sounds stupid but bear with me... I bought a copy of
"Civilization II - Multiplayer"
in August (UK Edition). The above quoted title is exactly as is shown on the cover of box, so therefore I obviously have a multiplayer verision! But trying to equate this title with ones I have seen here and elsewhere online has, so far, eluded me.

People talk about "CIV II classic", "CIV II GOLD" or "TOT" none of which seem to fit my title. The pictures of the boxes I have seen online also don't seem to correspond to the box that my game came in, so no hints there.
I reckoned that I had the GOLD version (that's what the readme file on the CD says I have) - but I have also read that "CIV II Gold" came with an extra scenario cd, which mine has not got.

I have seen a couple of patches for CIVII, but am worried about applying them without knowing what game I am running. This leads me on to the next question;

How do I know what version of the CIV II executable I have, and does it need patching?

When I go the credits I have the option of viewing either credits for CIV II or ULTIMATE CIV II, neither of which shows a version for the executable.

I would like to maybe join an internet game or download some of the MODS from here, but without knowing which game I run that might be a bit tricky !

Any help would very much appreciated

while playing, enter ctrl + o, the title bar of the popup window should identify the version.

I've got a similar problem, none of the patches I have found so far will work on my version of Civ II - it identifies itself as "Civilisation II Multiplayer" in start menu, and in game the version is given as "Ultimate Civilisation II 5.3.0f Multiplayer 1-February-99 Patch 2".

I've tried the civiimge_uccupdate3.exe patch, but it nicely informs me that I dont have a copy of Civ2 - not all that encouraging :/

I wouldnt mind, but I'm trying to play with a mate, and we both have the same version, so we can play alright, but it is INTOLERABLEY slow (really slow piece slides) for whoever isnt hosting the game, making wars impossible - it was taking ~ an hour for me to move 80-90 units from one side of my empire to the other, all the way on railroads .. - and we we're hoping that this patch will sort things out.

If anyones interested, hes on 56k dialup, and im on DSL, but surely there isnt that much overhead that could give way to such latency..

Problem you guys have is that your version was only released in Europe as far as I know and was not followed up with any patches after MGE was released (v. 5.4.0f). so what you can try and do is download my patch that makes Classic into MGE and give that a try, you will need to download the zips as the EXE will not be compatible. Unfortunately I have not been able to get my hands on a copy of this version and therefore not been able to create a compatible patch for it.
