First one getting too big to manage...

The rules :-
1) A asks a question, the rest will try to answer.
2) A must confirm which answer is correct.
3) Person (say B) with confirmed correct answer then asks the next question.
4) A cannot play again until B's turn is over (to prevent the thread turning into a 2 person spam party).
5) Repeat.
6) If person asking question doesn't login to confirm answers within 72 hrs of his question being posted, any one can ask a new question.
7) If no one can answer question within 72 hrs or can't get the right one, questioner can ask again.
8) Preferably no Net or book searches.

Thanks Panthera - that question was easy for me, as I had asked about the top ace and what he was proudest of (never losing a wingman) on this same (er, the previous, actually now) thread a few weeks ago...

This may be a bit more difficult, but I stumbled on it and can't resist:

What was the German codename for the troop buildup prior to Operation Barbarossa?

The German name, ironically, is identical to the one used for the program to restrengthen the former East German territory since the reunification of Germany (with small success so far).
If no one knows the German designation, I'll accept a translation. ;)

Aufbau Ost!

(translation probably "build-up in the East")

Too late - how about a question like "Startbahn West". Adler could also ask about something in the South or North.

Adler and Longasc both got it, but Adler was faster.

Over to you, Adler!

(Sorry, Germans had an advantage here...I just couldn't resist the irony; using the same term for rebuilding East Germany as was used to attack Russia)

Under Schöder indeed ;).
Okay my question: What is the name of the rockets used in the last days of the war from planes, espeially Me 262 against other planes and sometimes ground targets? How was the further developement after the war?

Adler

The R4M

I'm guessing it was the ancestor of post-war air-to-ground rocket pods but I'm not sure as the western allies used rockets in WWII too.

My question then :)

What was the MP43 and why was it so named?

It was a German machinegun manufactured in 1943, and it was named after MachinePistolet(sp?) '43.

Not actually a machine-gun (technically) ;)

Could it be the Sturmgewehr? I know they gave it some fake name to trick the allies :)

Overall I think I'll have to give it to Zeekater because he's right about the Rifle and I'm not getting the whole story from anyone (Adler is close but not precisely right sorry)... I suppose it is a bit obscure.

Hitler expressly forbade any new Rifles to be developed for reasons of logistics and partially his own experiences as an Infantryman in WWI (he was a fan of long-range high-powered cartridges). This meant that in order to still get the thing produced the armaments firm involved gave their new Rifle the designation of a sub-machine gun MP43.

It wasn't the MP43 to "calm down" the Führer but rather to keep him totally in the dark about it.

The story goes that the first Hitler knew about this secret rifle (secret from him not the allies who were already being shot at with it) was when he asked a group of Officers back from the Eastern Front what they most wanted and one of them said "We really want some more of these fantastic new MP43 Rifles" :p

Actually when he got to see one in 1944 he was so impressed himself he decided to redesignate it as an "Assault Rifle" so the MP43 became the Sturmgewehr 44.
