At this moment our great nation finds itself on the verge of mobile warfare. While swordsmen are still the most powerful attackers we have (soon to be replaced by even more powerful MDI's), technological advances for improved mounted units are just around the corner, so to speak. Our attack forces can also potentially benefit from artillery support, and defensive units for protection.

With -- in all probability -- quite a bit of warfare in the near future, this leads to the question what the forces composition of our armies should be. What mixture of swords/horses/catapults/spears (or their various upgrades) do we want? How should this evolve over time?

Discuss away!

The current policy of the CoAF can be found here.

Disclaimer:
I realize term 3 hasn't started yet, and I am hoping that our legal brains will not tear me apart for this - I meant no offense (pun intended).

If we can aquire Chivalry. We can build an all powerfull horse unit in the middle ages, the Knight. Since we are also going to get feudalism soon, we should think about upgrading our spears on the outer rim cities to pikemen.

We should eventualy also start to think about seige warfare in the upcomming war against the portugiese. By the looks of their cities (from the one when we built an embassy) that we would need artillery peices to soften up the city.

I think we should have 2 or 3 knights for every MDI. The number of Trebs we need should be based on the number of cities we need to attack. For example, i don't think we need to use trebs when we attack Portugal since they only have 3 cities. But when we attack China, we'll need a lot of trebs.

If we do a seaborne attack on portugal, trebs would take up room for swords/MDIs and horses/knights and spears/pikes. We have a lot of swords which means we can have a lot of MDIs. once we get feudalism, we should upgrade about 2/3 of our swords and upgrade the others later. as for horses, they are very expensive, 120 gold I believe. so, we should wait for more gold or leo's.

We should push forward and research Chivalry and Feudalism, then move onto invention. Also, Transport vessels should be seaworthy, but that wont come untill navigation or magnitism (whichever comes first).

I really have to catch my plane now, so here are some quick thoughts:

we have 24 swords (7 elite, 13 vet, 4 reg), 2 horse (vet), 13 spears (all vet?), 4 warriors (all reg?), 2 catapults. Way too few horses, and way too many troops to switch to republic (we'll be paying 70 gpt under current circumstances). I think for defense about a dozen horses would be good, to be upgraded to knights when possible. For offense, maybe double that amount.

Upon switching to republic, I would do away with all regulars, and probably also all spears (who needs them? They are just sitting around playing cards all day :) ).

all the regulars could be used in mopping up india and dutch in the peacefull/cultural period of republic. Also for small wars against china and france, while our old regular units are fighting these wars our new knights could be getting ready for any future wars.

Horses! To be upgraded into knights & calvary. I'd keep a couple of spears to be upgraded to pikes & beyond, and station them in Gordium once we capture it. In the meantime, if we do any siege warfare they do have their uses as part of a combined arms stack; although we should be acquiring all the territory we'll need long before artillery is on the scene.

Seems everyone more or less agrees: lots of horses, no additional swords, keep some spears. I'll update this bit of the CoAF policy soon. Vikingruler makes a good point about money, I'll start begging for funds ;)
