Can someone explain to me how all this notation works? I understand things like square numbers, but just saw this:

RNBKQBNR/1P4P1/P1P2P1P/3PP3

Can someone please explain the system behind it?

It's a FEN notation describing how the pieces are setup on the board, here's a wiki link.

Capital letters are pices of one side and lower case, pieces of the other side.

(usually start top left and work row by row)

The numbers represent blank squares on the board.
