While the general Hall of Fame is an ongoing competition, we like to run time-definite competitions between updates that we call Gauntlets. Standard Hall of Fame rules (*) still apply, but any games meeting the settings will be counted towards the Gauntlet.

*There is no Civ VI HOF Mod as of yet, so please play these games in the spirit of the >> Civ V HOF rules <<. Please review these before playing.

Settings:
 • Victory Condition: Cultural (though all victory conditions must be enabled)
 • Difficulty: Prince
 • Starting Era: Ancient
 • Map Size: Small
 • Map Type: Continents
 • Speed: Normal
 • Leader: Phillip II
 • Opponents: Any, 5 opponents only (default option)
 • Resources: Standard
 • Start Position: Standard
 • Limit Turns: By Game Speed
 • Must Not Be Checked: No Barbarians
 • Date: 30th October to 29th November 2016

The earliest finish date wins, with score as a tiebreaker.

While each map can only be played once, players are more than welcome to generate new maps and submit multiple games (although only the fastest finish will be counted). Also, as everyone is playing their own distinct maps, there is no need for spoiler limitation within the thread. In fact, we encourage detailed posting of strategy and gameplay.

Banned Tactics:
 • Buying/Selling Corps/Armies/Fleets/Armada
 • Making multiple gpt trades with the same AI (ie endless gold bug)

OK, a first stab at a gauntlet.

To enter please include your starting save and a save (autosave is OK) from the turn before victory in your post. Give us a general run down of your game as well.

So what strategies do people think will be needed for a cultural victory? What techs/civics should be beelined? What ones can be ignored? How do you attract tourists to the mighty Spanish empire?

Meaning no offense, but how does this work with the infinite gold and Scythian Horse Market type stuff in the game right now?

Could you clarify banned strats TBA? If I play this challenge can I get "not allowed strat" and have to replay?

My first try was the Reliquaries strategy, which seems to be the Sacred Sites of Civ6. I won on turn 153 and it actually felt really slow. The martyr apostles just wouldn't die fast enough - I was spawncamping Peter's and Teddy's Holy Sites for like 40 turns and smashing the apostles into the AIs' missionaries as soon as they appeared. On the bright side, I was also the suzerain of Kandy, which meant a free relic every time I found a natural wonder.

I'll make a wonder-spam attempt to see how that compares. The tourism from wonders and normal great works felt really lacklustre though. Is there any info on how exactly tourism is calculated? I couldn't find anything useful in the civilopedia.

As this is a Beta, if it isn't banned when you start the game, don't worry. If there are game breaking strategies that are likely to be patched with a later version, we will list them.

Well done. :goodjob:

First place for now!

I'd like to know this as well, was looking through the encyclopaedia and it had very little information

You have to play as Phillip II so can't use Scythian. Can you clarify the infinite gold (is this the continual selling of builders??).

I haven't tested it myself, but ( allegedly ) any leader can get infinite gold once they can buy armadas directly? ( Can you buy armadas directly with gold? )

Armadas/corps are allowed by the Mobilization Civic, which is quite late I the game. Shouldn't be a problem for a Culture victory. Will note under banned tactics though.

turn 153 seems fast i tried wonder spam and bee lined production to get them out and did it on turn 240 also had apostles for relics and looking at my tourism now the first relic did most of the work the ancient wonders produce 1 tourist for 7 or 6 tourism a turn where as my holy city was producing 32 8 +24 for relic giving a grand total of 15 out the 50 tourist needed. I didnt realise till near the end i also needed culture.... maybe reading the victory condition would have helped. Even Stonehenge only got 3 tourists for 932 tourism so i think apostle spam for relics is the way to go supported by a few early wonders. Stonehenge, mahdobhi temple and later mont st michel

I won on turn 209 and that's after forgetting I was even doing this because i got distracted by how cool i was making my empire.

Hard to get a sense of strategy at this level when you're able to generate 5x as much culture as the next highest opponent. Beelining Computers seems the sensible thing to do with any science lead, though. The beloved factory->power plant chain is on that same path so I can't think of any reason not to. I too took reliquaries but only ever got one Relic, and didn't really bother with great works, as you can tell - again, because I forgot why I was playing.

Note the tech difference

I might try it again though, I could definitely shave off time. I got distracted playing a sim game; the bay area to the west was too pretty.

If you're going Reliquaries, I think it might be a good idea to skip Stonehenge and let an AI get it. At least one AI needs to do well so that your martyr apostles have some religious opposition.

Question: does an AI holy city retain its religion and spawn missionaries/apostles of that religion when you capture it, like in Civ5? The idea I have is to take an AI holy city, found my own religion in my capital, and then spawn apostles of both religions and smash them into each other for some fast and easy relics.

Edit: Hmm nevermind I guess it can't work because you'd need to attack your own unit. Well, better include some religion-focused AIs next time then, Gandhi, Peter, Saladin...

Interesting idea. Don't know what would happen in this case. If you can generate apostles of different religions and get them to fight each other, would be a good way to get relics.

Yeah I just realized you probably can't attack your own units. I'll test it out anyway though.

Is there an option to gift units to AIs/CSs like in Civ 5? Maybe that could work instead...

update: tested it all and gifting units isn't a thing, so you can't gift apostles and them fight them. Can't fight your own units either

Yes, it does retain its religion. And you can potentially gift cities to AIs I just don't know which ones they would accept. Nice idea
Still, even though you said it felt slow, i think your T153 is quite an achievement. I'm sitting here T145 with my relic slots waiting but nobody wanting to kill my guys. I even sent them to multiple AIs.
I think I will restart and handpick some religious fanatics...

My result: 155 turns. Did a lot of mistakes thou... Also built 2 useless wonders: Stonehenge and Oracle. I think it was possible to win by the turn 140 or so in my game. Relics is 100% only option here. Maybe I'll replay this to beat the current leader. ^^

This is really a lot faster then I have managed but my games so far haven't had Kandy anywhere, I assume you did here? And how do people manage to get martyrs, Is there any other way to get them besides blind luck and Mont St.Michel? I had to pop 5 apostles before I got my first one and Mont St.Michel was about done at the same time.

And did those that finish have the seeds? Would be nice to run the same maps
