Civ4 Barbarians Scenario

Hello to all,this is my first post so please cut me a little slack if you will.
After searching for quite a while,I can't find any tips on how to play the barbarians.I seem to be totally overwhelmed by the AI civs after just a short time.Things start out OK and I'm making lots of gold and creating new units and buying promotions for my veterans.And then the word gets around so I get stomped by the do-gooders.
Please help out this old villain!

Yup, this is for the barbarian scenario in Civilization 4: Warlords.

I'd like to help but I haven't played this particular scenario for at least 5 years, and can't remember it much.

First, this thread should be moved to Civ4 General Discussions or S&Tip.
Second, I know the Barbarian Scenario well and I really don't see the "overwhelm" part at all. AI targets cities, not units and the barb team you play has no cities. Get the idea.
But the difficulty boils down to which difficulty you took and number of turns the AI can play alone. Also the map as continent maps are harder on higher difficulties.
