I allied with a city state earlier in the game while I was at war with Greece. I stole this ally from Greece. But I wasn't able to protect him and Greece took over the CS. I worked my way through Greece and managed to liberate the CS. Initially he declared war on me the next round, so I gave him 1000$ and a unit and that fixed the problem, for 2 rounds. Kinda seems like he has a problem with me having units in his territory while he doesn't have many units. Now I can't make him stay my ally no matter what I do. I can gift him my DR and he still declares war on me. Sooooo frustrating. Why the hell would he ally himself with Greece when Greece was the one to capture his city. I have like 300 influence with him and I'm gifting him units left and right.

probably because Greece is outbidding you for influence. Alex probably sees that he is no longer allied, so he dumps more cash to buy him back.
