I fought the most epic battle in RTW last night!

The setup was hardly inspiring: I had a one-star general on my quiet eastern border, building some watchtowers. He was escorted by a unit of principes and two units of town watch. All told, it was about 260 men.

On the inter-turn, a Thracian army of nearly 1200 men attacked! I groaned as I clicked "fight the battle", thinking it would be an ignominious defeat.

When I got to the battlefield, I discovered that we were fighting around a river ford! I set my men up near the center of the map, and the AI started crossing directly across from me. They had a lot of Peltasts and Hoplites. They only got a couple of units across, and then they got all clogged up halfway through the river -- their Peltasts stopped midriver to shoot at my men.

With them clogged up like that, I managed to pin the first couple of Hoplites with my infantry and mount a flanking maneuver with my general. I lost one of my Town Watch units, but the enemy routed!

From there, it was a frantic running battle back and forth, having my general chase down Peltasts until they'd rout, then coming back to charge the rear of any Hoplites fighting my Principes. Using those tactics, we utterly crushed the enemy army!

Final tally: 20 Cavalry with the General, 35 Principes, and about 20 Town Watch (returned to camp after routing during the battle). It stands out as the most amazing battle I've ever fought in the TW series!

two days ago i was playing as greace. cassius brutus (Roman) had been raiding the north from some time and had managed to take thermon. he was besieging athens when i came up from behind in order to lift the siege. i had one unit of spartans, 3 units of hoplites, 1 unit of archers and 2 units of militai hoplites. the battle was awesome. i was highly outnumbered so i took refuge on a hill that could only be climbed on one side. brutus was a good general, and he had a large number of reinforcements coming, but he made the tactical error of putting his calvalry on the right, which was where my spartens were. in the end i lost 80% of my army, he lost 90% of his, and he and his son died.
