Lanun is Amazing on Deity

Nothing else compares. They tech 2x faster than any other civ in the game, and if you have a coast start you can skip all builder techs.

After Fishing, this means you can prioritize Cartography followed by Mysticism and/or Mining. I can normally get Pact by turn 130 and the giants can protect you from everything.

No other civ can consistently win on Deity other than Lanun.

What do you look for in a starting location?

Beg to differ, as a long time Deity player, Svartalfar can do amazingly with early Hunter rush, and so can Hippus horse spam.
The leveling system in this game allows you to do broken things, with only minimal s/l. Experience is another resource.

Svart's problem is money. You have to prioritize hunting and then upgrade your promoted scouts to hunters, which costs lots and lots of gold. Unless you have a strong commerce start, like wines everywhere around you, your economy crashes.
