Obsolete units can still have great use and shouldn't be disbanded.
1. When under threat and you haven't finished your defensive line or whatever, just slap together a makeshift line of whatever obsolete units you have. It should buy you some crucial time while you prepare propper defenses.
2. Remember, all units do a minimum of 1 damage. If you have 10 warriors, you can wipe out a Giant Death Robot, especially effective in multiplayer against enemy morale.
3. Keep obsolete units to enjoy the low maintance and upgrade them to full when you need to go to war. Good money saver. Think of them as reserves.

I thought obsolete units cost the exact same maintenance as more advanced ones. A warrior, worker, workboast or mech infantry each costs 4-5 gold per turn at end game, no?

Um, number three is factually incorrect. Unit maintenance costs the same, regardless of how technologically advanced the unit in question is.

Besides, the OP forgot the most obvious use for obsolete units.

With the right social policies, obsolete land units can be used for maintenance free culture and happiness when garrisoning a city.

In fact, it's not uncommon for me to be building Scouts in the late Renaissance era for this very reason.
