Ottomans special ability

How does it work? In my recent game as them I have now sunk 9 barbarian ships with my own and never convertered a single one.

never played them but from what i hear is you have to move next to them to take them.

I just finished a game with them, and yes, you need to move your ship close to the barbarian ships (I think it usually occurred within 2-3 hexes of the ship, close enough to bombard). I actually created quite a huge navy by using this strategy, just sailing around and converting quite a few barbarian ships.

If you find a remote island with a barb camp on it you can farm it for some significant seapower. At the very least you can then move the ships to your territory and disband them for gold (and then spend on Jan's) but it also is nifty to shock everyone with a sudden navy of frigates when you upgrade.
