Preparing for a game as Celts (Emperor, Standard Map). Is Pyramids worth trying for?
I mean, sure, if you're lucky enough to snag an SGL on your way to Republic, then grabbing a Wonder (Pyramids, or Colossus, or maybe the GLib — depending on your map-type, Civ, and/or intended VC) is pretty much a no-brainer.

But if you're not actually going for a 20K city, then as a general rule (though one that may be broken on occasion — once you've learnt to recognise the right circumstances! ;) ) in the early game, it's almost always better to put your still quite limited shields into units than an expensive Wonder(s), even one so brokenly OP as the Pyramids.

Those 400 shields could instead get you 40 assorted Warriors and Workers, or 10 Settlers (or Horsemen, or GSwords), and at Emperor level I know which I'd rather have during the early game.

(Says the guy who, in his current Standard-Size-Raging-Barbs-Random-everything-else DG game, hand-built the Mausoleum in Amsterdam...)
