What happens when a barbarian takes a city?

Is there barbarian cities, or does it turn into an encampment?

Nope. The city does not get taken but the player whose city was sacked loses a sum of gold.

Barbarians are weak compared to Civ4. I have never seen them take a city.

^^barbs had cities in civ 4 but not in civ 5. Even raging barbs cant take a city now.

The Barbs sack the city, stealing gold and population. It's the same rules as Civ3. I will say that city-defense makes it more difficult for them to successfully attack. However, once they sack the city (I had to deliberately encourage it the first time), it's hard to prevent other barbs from sacking it as well (because your city defense stays at zero).
