Why do I always start so far south?

In nearly every game that I've started, I'm in the extreme far south of the map (as English and Dutch anyway, haven't really played French or Spanish). There have been very few games where I'd start near the north end or at the equator, but those are a tiny minority.

Try using one of Dale's mods, either the unofficial patch(only fixes things, no actual mods) or AoD II(full-fledged mod, adds in Portual, Pirates, many fixes & additions)
