Hi everybody.

I’ve been playing CIV for a long time (since CIV II) and I also occasionally read these forums, but I have never posted before. So please don’t be too hard on me :)

This is a guide about winning OCC on deity.

As far as I know, there have already been some guides on the subject so far – the best probably one written by Phyacis. (My credits to him at this point) As much fun as it was for me to try out, one will still need PA to win using his strategy, and so I started trying to do it „all by myself”. At last – today – I was successful. I want to point out, that this has likely been done before, but afaik not yet written down. So here we go and those who haven't thought of this strategy by themselves yet, may have some fun.

I have not playtested too extensively, so I present almost no absolute rules. I just say how I did this, and you can try for yourself, which way is best. I played my game under following conditions.

GAME VERSION: 1.61
MAP SIZE: Duel (although Tiny might do)
MAP TYPE: Archipelago, Tiny Islands. Now this is an absolute must, as you will understand.
GAME SPEED: Epic. I suspect, though, that Marathon would be easier.
LEADER: Roosevelt. I chose him, as I was hoping to use Navy SEALs, yet I won Conquest Victory the turn I discovered Electricity and built Pentagon, so some other leaders might be as good or better. IMHO, Fishing and Mysticism as starting techs are best here, though.
OPPONENTS: 4 (Handpicked Hatshepsut, Cyrus, Isabella and Kublai). No Financial, Philosophical, Organized nor Industrious enemies makes life easier for you. Add them if you need extra challenge.
EXTRA CONDITIONS: OCC Actually makes life easier too, as otherwise you would not be able to build those nice National Wonders ;)
EXTRA VICTORY CONDITIONS: All enabled – although we are going for conquest here.

Now, after starting the game, you will most likely find yourself on an isalnd 3-4 squares big. You have to make sure, that you have got Iron there. No Iron = screwed. Having it is a high possibility though :) . Naturally, the more Seafood and more varied you have, the better. I got lucky with 1 fish, 1 crabs and 3 clam.

Your aim from now on is to be the first to Frigates, and therefore to victory.

I will only describe my own game from now on, and you may try a similar or different strategy – there are certainly better players than I around, who may try to optimize things.

I managed to found Hinduism first, while building Fishing Boats. I also built Oracle and took Metal Casting, then built Stonehenge and Colossus. Sailing researched then, to be the first to circumnavigate. Then Monarchy, to solve the happiness problem. After that I went for Bureaucracy, after that for Liberalism (first!) then Astronomy/Chemistry. From that on, it isn’t that important any more. Constitution for Representation, Steel for Ironworks and Drydocks, Military Tradition for West Point is probably best.

What did it take to destroy my opponents? Well – Frigate is so vastly better than anything before it, that if you are the first to build them, its almost too easy to starve your opponents to death. Just 4 ships will make any water tile in the fat cross unusable to your enemy – and most of their cities will be on islands 1-2 squares big. Check who else has got Iron (changing world maps first might help). Your opponents will probably have Riflemen already, so use your abundant cash from Shrine and Great Prophets to upgrade your former (you have Globe Theater by now, right?) „happiness resources” (Warriors, Archers, etc) into Grenadiers, and send them to attack whoever else has Iron. Pillage their mines, and you will become incvincible ruler of the seas – and hence, the world. After I won my game in the end of XIXth century, I had: 27 frigates, 1 Galleon, 1 Axeman (protecting my capitol  ) 1 Worker (idle for some 2 thousand years:king: ) and 3 Grenadiers: 2 of them with Combat V, Amphibious, Pinch and Formation, 1 with Medic I and March. I had lost 2 earlier, but basically those who were left, destroyed 4 opponent civs single-handedly. :goodjob:

Have fun!

What's so important about Iron if you're not prioritising Ironworks or attacking with melee units? Iron is not needed for Frigates.

_Iron is not needed for Frigates._

Hm, it sure is needed. As for getting early wonders, Industrious trait really helps out. Also keep in mind, that (although I don't really know what kind of production bonuses AI's have on that level) they will have very little land (and thus really low hammer output).

Wow...I simply assumed Frigates requires no resources. So basically if you don't have Iron you are screwed quite badly on water maps.

This article is very interesting. I wonder why it is possible to beat the AI to Hinduism, Oracle, Stonehenge, Collosus, Circumnavigation of the globe, and Liberalism. I am sure that it has something to do with theisland map, but i would never have guessed that it would make Deity easier instead of harded. Anyways, great guide.

Glad you found it interesting, jafink.
Try it out, it would be nice to know how others will manage.

Islands are good, because while you are sitting in your capitol, which is hopefully well situated and able to give decent production, food and commerce, the AI is wasting its resources to inhabit 1-square islands, getting bogged down in city upkeep costs in process. I was also never attacked early when using this strategy, meaning I could keep just warriors for happiness purposes, On continent or pangaea, this would be suicidal...

Specialist economy is also pretty rewarding under these conditions. Specialist will easily best ocean square...

Yes, but unfortuneately I will probably not be triyng it out very soon, because im busy will school, and playing FfH. I'll be sure to post here once I do try it.
