If you take a culture ruin on turn 1 it doesnt actually help you. You'll only have 20-21 culture and the first policy choice is at 25.
Pop on the other hand provides an immediate benefit, and will allow you to take another pop on the 4th ruin you encounter.

Yeah I build 2 pathfinders in addition to the starting one. With a lot of good tiles to work and fast growth it can take about as a long as standard 2 x scout opening.
You really want to take advantage of as many ruins as you can. Also at least one of these guys will upgrade to a composite bow...
I like playing Shoshone and usually take pop, culture, unit upgrade, pop, faith if possible, anything else is a bonus :)

I rate and use ampitheatres for faster border expansion. Your expos quite often only produce 2 culture early on so an extra 1 culture from the amp is 50% faster border expansion

Shakas the scariest guy to start next to for me. All you can do to survive is pay him to war elsewhere or settle really really defensively.
Attila a close second because at least his hard counter (Pikemen) comes with Civil Service. Shakas hard counter (the atomic bomb) comes kinda late
If it looks like Ill be getting religions with faith buildings from nearby AIs, I quite like opening piety after Tradition and then taking the +1 faith from shrines and temples.
Works well if you get the oracle as you can start building the shrines and temples at double speed in a time period...
Maximising your city growth is the key to strong game in my opinion. Getting better at this has improved my game a lot.
