That was Mohammad himself. It was Jerusalem originally, later converted to Mecca (interestingly, before the muslims had even conquered that city). There's some controversy as to the political motivations behind it.
Sorry I should have provided a link: Civ V stock image scavenger hunt...
Suleiman's father may have been to Jerusalem; but to my knowledge he hasn't. The region was under Ottoman control at the time.
The Dome of the Rock doesn't make sense for Suleiman; that's for sure. Here's my conjecture as to why the designers made it so:
They probably Googled for a stock image...
What to expect 'quantitatively' is pretty straightforward, and helpfully tabulated at the following link: difficulties thread on civfanatics

It's almost as though they used Google translate for the...
Not to mention the endpoint of that 'progress' being the reflection of a certain worldview----the stock exchange brings happiness to the masses; future technologies are introduced with a quote from 'that guy'; everything can be made into a commodity; faith points buy great scientists, and so on...
Thanks! I was a member way back before Civ III was released; I took part in the speculations, etc. I sort of returned to rabid fandom with the release of BNW ('vanilla' Civ V was a huge disappointment for me) so I thought I might join again.
I'm not sure whether this is correct (not that I...
