It's pretty cute that people think there is a primary. It's the Trump Party now, whether anyone thinks that is a good idea or not. If the literally everything Trump has done since 2015 wasn't enough to discredit him, the only way to stop him is for the entire political system to repudiate Trump...
I find the classical era has the best balance / sense of advancement. By medieval, if you're effective enough at managing cities you have the sense that your cities are capable of so much more and max out capacity, but there's not a sense of strife or tension in most games. You're more settled...
Haven't played Victoria but perhaps I should - have heard great things about the series and I've read a lot about the British Empire. It does help to focus in on a particular era.
1UPT kills the game, and the devs won't get off of it. The problems within Civ 4 are fixable by better means, but the mentality of the series moved towards making it a skinner box rather than a game.
I still think Civilization 2 is the more interesting game for its time, but Civ 4 mods give it...
I'm still fond of philosophical because early game great people have a lot of utility, and Phi boosts some buildings at a time where they are very welcome. Industrious also gets really good results, since it allows for an early "industrial revolution" due to the crasftman boost and the right...
Played Religion and Revolution many years ago, just found out that development on a new mod has restarted. Great news!
I just wonder, is the European colonist AI any good at defending their colonies? War was too easy from what I recall in RaR, but I understand it would be hard to fix the game...
The Russian unique improvement gives forests +2 food +1 hammer +2 commerce with Ancient era techs, which is a lot better than most improvements of that time.
Finally finished an Emperor game! Did a culture victory - these seem a lot easier than they were in vanilla, or I just never tried for culture there. I don't think I did a GOOD culture victory, as it was in the 1680s and I wasn't even leading in score, but I had good relations with most AIs...
By this I mean a tech whose cost is increased by 100% due to the new "tech in appropriate age" penalty to research. It's quite punishing.
I've had quite a bit of experience with vanilla so Monarch was for the longest time my level. I give myself a leg up by doing advanced starts (part of why...
AI spies love to steal your treasury if it piles up.
My usual strategy is to research most of a 100% tech, then switch to another, and another, until the next age advance. That retains most of the beakers, and it's one of the ways to get a leg up on the AI.
I just gave up on my best Emperor game yet in the latest version. I could have won it, but it was going to be really, really rough. Things I noted that are 3.55 specific:
- Tech limitations really help the AI - not possible to build up a huge tech lead like it was pre-3.55, outside of medieval...
To answer the second question - there is no one answer that will fit every map, aside from the aforementioned use of Pastoral Nomadism. Slavery is another obvious choice but your only other choice in the early game offers very little. The revolts are not that big a deal and it is free great...
Outside of advanced start - worker first. The extra food and hammers (and potentially commerce) from opening with the worker is likely better than anything you would get from the starting buildings. The first worker can go a long way, building improvements in advance so you need fewer workers...
