Even if i do not for a second believe that a warrior and an archer defeated 17 cavalry I know what you mean!
The only way to get somwhere in Civ3, even on warlord-level, is to only procuce military units, settlers and workers in the beginning, because that is what Al does. No early wonders...

Strange also that even if i choose culturally linked start-position, sometimes, the vikings start on desert lands. Theres no deserts in Scandinavia.
Mostly all the time when i choose random civilizations as opponents the most common is that i get the Incas, the aztecs, the mayas or the Iroquis. One can wonder if the creators faovured this civs, as the indians were oppressed by the americans.

Its interesting anyhow how often when chosing random civs the aztecs, the incas, and the iroquis appear. Its so one can think that the programmers favour indian civs. The three nations expand very fast and are difficult to fight even at lower levels.
Civ III is in my opinion the best Civ. Much because the graphics and gaming are simple and it has the "right" civ-feeling. I really enjoy starting a new game with a new world to explore, and I like the sound fx's. The music is good too but I prefer to turn it off because it tend to be disturbing...
You can build them a short time before discovering Horseback riding. Ive never used one, but the Egyptians have their special-unit war-chariots that they seem to send hordes of when at war.
I would say:
Horsemen - Can hardly even fight an Archer, worthless against spearmen.
Musketmen - Easily fought by Longbowmen, Medieval Infantry and Knights, even though 4 in defense. Pikemen often have better defense.
Regular tanks - Sometimes they lose against Guerilla and even middle...
I found out that the enemy always attacks your weakest cities first if they are transporting units from another continent. Then you can manipulate them by making another city weaker, and they will sail to that one, and then change back to the first weak city, and they only sail forward and back...
