The exact number varies, based on the ratio of culture and the power of the units in the garrison. For an old city with lots of "enemy" culture, you might need 15-20 units. Here's how to tell: Double-click the city and look in the lower left corner. There's a bar showing the relative...

The wall you see onscreen is just a decoration (and/or a source of amusement when you see a 1-tile lake carefully walled off from the rest of the world). You have to capture the city where it was built to get any benefit.

I didn't do a good job of explaining, so I'll try to do better here: In theory, yes, you can try to steal territory with culture, and you can even get some short-term success flipping tiles. But in practice, you have to turn your :culture: slider up a few notches, which costs you :science...

I'm going to echo Dalamb's suggestion that you post in the Strategy and Tips forum, perhaps with a new game. Take frequent screenshots, make a post describing what you're doing and why, and solicit advice. Then play a few more turns and repeat the process. You can learn a lot by doing that...

I'll give you a really helpful answer: It depends. ;) The goal is basically to arrange your cities so that their citizens are working as many useful tiles as possible. Sometimes, particularly in the early game, that means crowding them together with a fair degree of overlap. Other times...

Ditto to everything Lord Parkin just said. I'll also elaborate a little on you last question abut learning the game. The best way to learn anything is by doing it. So just play. See what works (and what doesn't). When you start winning every time, move up a difficulty level and refine...

I think most people around here--including me--will tell you that the best corps by far are Sid's Sushi and Mining Inc. Because seafood is more plentiful on most maps than grain, you'll actually get more :food: from Sid's Sushi than from Cereal Mills, plus some extra :culture: (which may or may...

Jwitti's reply is a good approximation. If you want more detail (and you may well not want it), read on... All combat in Civ IV is conducted in rounds. The attacker and defender each have a chance to win each round, and if they do, they'll deal a little damage to their opponent. The chance...

According to This article in the War Academy, the cost is 125% of the base cost of the tech. Note that a tech's base :science: cost is higher than the :science: cost you see on the tech tree, as you almost always have one or more discounts. (For instance, when you research a tech, you get a...

Not necessarily. Basically once you're over your :yuck: cap, you can think of it as taking 3 :food: per additional citizen instead of 2. If you've got enough surplus food, you might as well grow and get the extra output from your new citizen. If you've only got 1 or 2 surplus, then it might...

Go into the city screen and click on the city's name at the top of the window. This works for any city, even one you previously founded.

    Whimsical names for cities

If I'm playing as a civ with unpronounceable city names (I'm looking at you, Tlaczipanvxlbml), I rename cities after cities and towns in my home state of Nebraska. It's always fun to see Omaha become the holy city of Taosim. :)

    Uses for old units

Well, that's a fancy garrison you've got there. I routinely build tanks, jet fighters, and spaceship parts in cities guarded by guys wearing loincloths. I prefer to think of it as their "ceremonial uniform." :)
