The president of Mexico is trying to out-Trump Donald Trump. He keeps refusing to close borders or businesses or anything, and actively encourages people on social media to go outside and mingle. Unless he has a secret plan to wipe out all drug dealers along with a third of the population the man is not only deranged but also aimless.

Rand Paul failed to isolate himself (and instead used the senate gym, pool and attended many meetings) for 6 days while he waited for tests.

I don't actually see any problem here. Per US guidelines, he shouldn't even have received a test, and had no reason to isolate. He just wrangled one as a member of the elite.

There isn't much logical reason to isolate if you don't have symptoms, don't meet the criteria to isolate, don't meet the criteria for a test, but do somehow manage to jump the queue for a test.

Maybe they should delay births as well.

Well, gf's workplace has a confirmed case...guy came to work seven days after being symptomatic and no telling how long before he was symptomatic.

Per guidelines, since he was informed he was at a meeting with two people who were since confirmed cases he was supposed to self isolate for fourteen days and see if he became symptomatic.

I mean, I was going off this: https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...854020-6d17-11ea-a3ec-70d7479d83f0_story.html

I don't keep up to date with specific US guidelines, but either you're mistaken about the guidelines, or Paul's statement is a blatant lie (or Paul is a dummy and didn't bother to check the guidelines prior to releasing the statement) that WashPo printed without fact checking.

I'd like to see employers made liable for the result of any employees who attend work while sick.

Can't guess what the WaPo source is, since paywall, but a brief google and visit to five different state level DoH sites was unanimous...if you KNOW that you were face to face with someone who has been confirmed positive, self quarantine and check for symptoms for fourteen days.

Being able to jump the line and get a test might have justified self quarantine for seven days (that seems long but apparently that's how long it took) and be freed by a negative test...at best.

I want to make a post to help us stack the odds in our favor.
Standing 6 feet from everyone else (2 meters) is a good start.

First, I want to repost the symptoms even if they are not up to date.
Someone may have already posted this, but I can't find it from earlier in the thread.

Obviously fever is the biggest symptom.
Hopefully everyone has a thermometer and is checking their temperature morning and night. :please:

Shortness of breath is the most alarming symptom since this is a virus that literally destroys your lungs.
It is possible to check out the business end of how much oxygen is in your blood with an O2 finger monitor.
https://www.amazon.com/TrackAid-Portable-Saturation-Monitor-Display/dp/B07BNL9M4C
It just goes onto the fingertip like a clip to keep a bag of snacks closed.
Ideally it should be at 98% to 100% at all times, but if it drops down to 95% you have a problem. :hmm:
90% means you need pure oxygen I think (long-term oxygen feeds tend to be given to people down to the last 10% of their lungs )
85% means you need one of those precious ventilators to keep going I've heard.
I'm not a doctor and don't know the reliability of these cheap devices, so please judge for yourself if this might be worth your precious money.

One of the new symptoms they are seriously considering adding is losing sense of smell. (anosmia)
2/3rd's of Germans who get infected lose their sense of smell according to this U.K. ear, nose, and throat specialist report.
https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/23/health/coronavirus-symptoms-smell-intl/index.html
"In Germany it is reported that more than 2 in 3 confirmed cases have anosmia. In South Korea, where testing has been more widespread, 30% of patients testing positive have had anosmia as their major presenting symptom in otherwise mild cases."
Weirdly enough, I had a sinus infection permanently? destroy about 1/3rd of my sense of smell, but then I suddenly got it back one day 10 years later.

Anyway, current thinking is that digestive symptoms are a much more common symptom than thought. (50%)
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/coronavirus-digestive-symptoms-diarrhea-almost-half-of-patients/
Almost half of coronavirus patients have digestive symptoms, study finds
How reliable is American news though?
==================

Next, masks help lower the spread.
Again, I'm almost certain somebody posted this earlier, but I can't find it.
https://www.vox.com/policy-and-poli...s-us-countries-italy-iran-singapore-hong-kong

Since USA has totally screwed-up by not stockpiling masks, the CDC recommends only wearing one if you are sick or are a medical worker.
Realistically, that means everyone else should use low-effective bandanas or scarves until we can get a good surplus of masks.
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/ppe-strategy/face-masks.html
HCP use of homemade masks:
In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.

Also, moderate exercise seems to boost the immune system, so definitely do that.
https://www.sciencealert.com/should-we-be-exercising-during-the-coronavirus-pandemic
A large study showed that mild to moderate exercise – performed about three times a week – reduced the risk of dying during the Hong Kong flu outbreak in 1998.

The Hong Kong study was performed on 24,656 Chinese adults who died during this outbreak. This study showed that people who did no exercise at all or too much exercise – over five days of exercise per week – were at greatest risk of dying compared with people who exercised moderately.

Additionally, studies performed on mice demonstrated that regular exercise performed two to three months prior to an infection reduced illness severity and viral load in obese and non-obese mice.

Thus, limited animal and human data cautiously suggest that exercise up to three days per week, two to three months prior, better prepares the immune system to fight a viral infection.

In fact, 82 percent of the mice who exercised 20-30 minutes a day during the incubation period, or the time between getting infected with flu and showing symptoms, survived.
In contrast, only 43 percent of the sedentary mice and 30 percent of the mice who performed strenuous exercise – or 2.5 hours of exercise a day – survived.
I assume good blood flow really moves around the immune system cells?
Not sure why exercise to exhaustion is so dangerous. :dunno:

If anyone else has other tips, please post them.

It's a soft paywall, a good adblocker (uBlock origin) bypasses it. Probably only get one or two articles until you clear cookies/history if you let the site set them.

I don't know about US guidelines, but certain jurisdictions distinguish between self-monitoring after potential exposure and self-isolating after close contact.

I like that chart, but it has one problem...it doesn't identify time frames for the symptoms. From what I've seen in my scouting the fever is in fact the sure sign symptom, but it is frequently the last one to appear. By the time you say "okay, got a fever, looks like I do have it" pretty much everyone you know will have already been exposed if you haven't already isolated yourself at least a few days before.

The nasal symptoms are apparently light, and temporary to boot, but they are supposedly one of the very early developments.

Rand Paul sat at a table with two people who both later tested positive. Whether the guidelines differentiated based on potential exposure v close contact, he certainly qualified as close contact.

If Mitch McConnell gets Covid 19 and dies we will have Rand Paul to thank for it.

It does raise the issue of a sort of very soft assassination vector, doesn't it.

Trump, who theoretically has access to the best information available to anyone: "We are starting to sanitize these masks so they can be reused. There are many liquids. This will solve the problem with the shortage of masks."
Doctor who runs a hospital: "We are doing everything we can to make the masks last as long as possible. We have reusable face shields that we wipe down and sanitize and those prevent direct contamination from body fluids splashing or spraying onto the mask itself. But the masks are disposable and they can only be used so long."
Trump: "But the liquids."
...

What's sad is I had no idea if you were making that conversation up or not. Not reflecting on you, 'cause it would have been (gallows) funny & kinda in character if you were making it up, but I finally after a while Googled it &... it turned out HE ACTUALLY SAID THAT. HOLY [poop]. I had to Google it...

"I have to tell you, the throwing away of the masks, being in private business, the throwing away of the mask right away, they're throwing it away," Trump said during Saturday's White House coronavirus briefing. Suggesting that health care workers instead clean and reuse the masks, the President said: "We have very good liquids for doing this, sanitizing the masks, and that that's something they're starting to do more and more. They're sanitizing the masks."
It is unclear which type of mask the President was describing, but US Food and Drug Administration guidelines for the common N95 respirator masks state they "should not be shared or reused."

It's what I found from just literally Googling Tim's quote: https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/21/politics/trump-sanitize-medical-masks/index.html

I mean, holy ****! I thought it was a dark Tim-joke, which I like reading, keep those up, but it turns out that was true & Trump actually said that!

um I feel bad wanting to send him a beer if that happens. should I feel bad?

I work at a hospital and we have been making homemade masks over the weekend that I could wear this week to protect me and the patients. I was informed I'm not allowed to wear homemade masks I have to wear their disposable ones. I informed them that this policy was stupid and short sighted. See how long I last pointing out obvious facts to a bunch of administrators that are just as concerned with the PR of all this as they are the bomb that's about to hit their facilities.

Last I read that sentiment it was attributed to sub Klan trolls.

'Yea I feel bad but McConnell is so so evil. Must I have sympathy for the devil?

This is both Hilarious and tragic

Arizona Man Dies After Trying COVID-19 Remedy Touted by Trump
An Arizona man died after he and his wife ingested a chemical in an attempt to prevent a coronavirus infection, Banner Health said in a press release. His wife is in critical care. Both are in their 60s.The chemical — chloroquine phosphate — is commonly used to clean fish tanks.

During a press conference on Thursday, President Donald Trump touted chloroquine as showing "very, very encouraging early results" in treating COVID-19 and falsely stated that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was working "to be able to make that drug available almost immediately." The drug has been used to treat malaria.

Minutes after Trump made the false claim, FDA Commissioner Steven Hahn said a "clinical trial, a large, pragmatic clinical trial" would be required before making any determination on the use of chloroquine to treat the coronavirus.
In its press release, Banner Health advised against "the use of inappropriate medications and household products to prevent or treat COVID-19."

It probably improves one?

A rueful chuckle might be inescapable, depending.
