    (un)Happiness formula

Same can be said about Rome, Russia or France. The reason is national wonders. To build Heroic Epic you need barracks in every city. Buildings are expensive and slow to produce, unless you want to keep buying them but will all those small pop cities create enough gold? Doubtfull.

Where do I load the demo from?

On http://store.steampowered.com/ you have to click install steam (top right corner) and follow instructions. Once you have software installed, you can use its browser to find demo which will be availible on 21 of Sept.

Civ land military units equivalent to?

Initially, warrior represents just a band of men with clubs that could be assembled from one area. Increase of strentgh through ages symbolizes not only better firepower but also greater numbers as logistics, medicine and hygine improved. So I would estimate final units would be divisions.

The (failed) VIP group (Gamescom, again)

Most beta testers said that was their feeling initially as well but game slowed down later on and eventually become longer than avarage civ4 session. Thanks for your input anyway.

    What's up with the Hoplite?

Cities defend themselves and (i guess with invention of archery) have attack range, add several more units like warriors and perhaps you can defend yourself against a bigger army. But warrior rush seems strategicaly viable enough to try it.

Has Firaxis finally learned to balance the game?

You tend to forget about one small thing. Apparently, units maitanance is quite a balancing thing. Much more annoying than in civ4. Which means, Russia's special ability may or unique unit without resource requirement may not be as overpowered as you think.

    Artificial Intelligence

So far, every preview of the latest beta version I've seen said that AI handled itself good enough during combat. But I am sure there will be many exploits/tricks that a smart player will be able to use in his advantage to level the playfield on higher difficulties.

    Potential strategies

Pick Rome and use Legions + ballistas to capture land of 2-3 neigbours that have some luxury resources you don't posses. From there on, build economy in those regions abusing powers of "Glory of Rome". Sounds kinda like civ4 ;)

Something VERY important and often underrated: realistic terrain placement

I ran some of those map scripts. Results were always layers of desert, layers of jungle, layers of grassland, than plains, tundra, snow. Realistic, ok, but almost unplayable if you got your spawn in wrong place. Imo much more important from civ5 perspective would be how many hills and...

Negative. You can embark as soon as you have triemes, so Sailing. However, untill Astronomy you are restricted to shore.

    Japan overpowered??

Screen WAS taken by Azzazel and is genuine. Although, some things may still change before final release.

    Japan overpowered??

I agree with 12agnar0k above. Additionally, we have to take into consideration fact, that allegedly veteran civ players were testing it trying to find some exploits. There will never be perfect balance but by the look of it, civ5 is adequate.

    Community Feature: Strategic Resources

I guess it is actually good to have less types of strategic resources because there will be a lot more of them on the map in total. It will not be an issue of availibility, rather of sufficient quantity.

    Siberian Riches

Apart from the weird name for Askia I can see loads of potential in all of them. My only concern is overpowered Russia but maybe there are game mechanics we are not fully aware of. From what I read, maitanance of units is kinda heavy burden so maybe having double strategic resources does not...

    Siberian Riches

Screenshoot comes from preview version my collegue was doing. He answers our questions on other board and that was mine (special abilities). It is as legit at it can be at this level of development. @ Mercade Indeed it is, initially I was typing from memory, later I recieved confirmation I am...

Siberian riches - +1 production on strategic resources, double quantity of horses and iron River warlord - double amount of gold capturing settlement, units can defend while embarked http://img195.imageshack.us/f/19468941.jpg/

Although Civ5 makes improvements, combat remains the series' weak point

I fail to see the fun factor in armies. Played Call to Power and never really liked this idea. Although it may not be entirely realistic as they plan it in civ5, I still think it is gonna be a lot more interesting and brain crunching than "put 2 spears, 1 archer and 2 knights into army, than...

Is anyone else appalled by the Eurocentrism in Civ?

You can't really cope with pace of this forums. If Astronomy isn't good example for what I was saying why not try it with say, republic system. Athens were republic in ancient world before they discovered anything like feudalism or paper. Yet in game we are forced to allways follow path of...
