Spies : How do you use them?

When playing on deity, I just can't wait for some of the AI-s to finally hit renaissance, and give me a spy, to be able to steal techs finally. On deity, you are going to still lag behind on tech by renaissance, so spying is very helpful for catching up. Stealing a tech every ten turns or less...

Archipelago game- what civ, what strategy?

And just one note about the Great Lighthouse: if you play on a high difficulty level (e.g. Deity), then you might not be able to build it. But that's OK, just conquer the civ that has built it ;) AI really sucks at naval combat, so if you prepare well (build 6-8 frigates and 3 privateers), then...

Your units are at my borders...

When the AI is really intending to attack you, they do not actually position their troops carefully near your borders - they just hoard the whole army your way, and DOW you as soon as the first unit comes in contact with your borders (usually near your capital). So setting a certain lower limit...

Defeated once again by sheer boredom

The best way to end a war is to reduce the AI's army and increase yours. And increasing can be done not just by pumping out new units, but also by getting a tech advantage and upgrading your units. I just had a case like that very recently. I'm trying an Aztec culture game on Immortal, and I've...

    Diplomacy Sucks, example #247

Well, there are some civs with whom you can get friendly and some with whom you normally can't. They do have personalities, you know. And the biggest mistake of the OP is that he thought that China were an amiable type. They aren't, and this fact doesn't make diplomacy any worse. Diplomacy is...

    Submarines! Do you love them?

I find them very good value for money. The fact that they don't require a resource means that they are good for creating the secondary fleet in those games where you have a main fleet, which already has some task. I really love the fact that they can be used to scout enemy territory without...

    My first overseas invasion

Also, it could often be a better strategy to start with a coastal city and not the capital. Your 5 battleships and 4 destroyers would be able to take the coastal city in 1-2 turns with no losses, and then you'd have a nice base from where to develop your campaign (and rush buy new units if needed).

What factor makes you choose liberty over tradition in a new game? (or vice versa)

Obviously, this depends on whether you plan to have big cities or to have many cities. Tradition gives you the ability to grow the cities faster, while liberty is necessary for the happiness bonus (settler and worker help too, but not so much; plus, the finisher is very useful to grab/enhance a...

    Does Anybody Ever Enslave Workers?

With Aztecs, one Jaguar near their borders isn't enough to bully them, even if you have two more elsewhere (at least on Deity). Another question: if you enslave a worker, does it appear near your capital or near the respective CS? In the former case, it could be a useful thing sometimes.

Anyone worked out what hideouts are for?

@Adjuvant So, you mean that if the spy is assigned to a foreign city, then it doesn't take time to travel and to establish surveillance for moving into hideout and back into the city? If so, I'd see a hideout as an excellent thing for getting intel on your enemy's city without any risk of being...

    Austria is damn strong

    That seems fair.

Is this true, did I see this right?

Answering to the OP: the solution I'd use would be to get a great engineer (and to get Theology by that time), and wait till you GP pops. Immediately after that, build the Hagia Sofia and get the second GP.

Another perfect example of diplomacy SUCKING

Speaking of which, that would sometimes be very valuable information, something similar to intrigue. I'd say, it would be good if you could somehow get that kind of intel through espionage.

The most infuriating diplomacy fails in G&K

That's an interesting idea, never actually tried this. Will try next time. Usually, I simply choose the side, and denounce the guys who had been denounced by the side I chose. This helps to cement friendship quite a lot. And this is a very useful tip for all the peaceful players getting in...

    Denouncing...seriously guys? Seriously?

Like others said, it's the snowball effect. To explain in more detail: - first, you got the penalty for DOW and promise breaking with Siam and Japan (not sure if it applied to others who hadn't met Huns yet) - then, Japan denounced you, which could have cause the penalty from you for Siam -...

You can purchase them in any city with the respective religion. In the same menu where you purchase stuff for gold.

    Dealing with China

I agree with the previous post: if she want to get you so badly, you need to produce an army. Put other things on hold for 10-15 turns, and spit out some units.

Yes, I agree, inside a lake the GA is almost always totally useless.

    Battering Rams suck

It does seems very ironic that Attila the Hun, a barbarian himself, finds himself most impeded when there are barbarians nearby.
