    Headlines

Has anyone tried to edit KING.TXT to customize the headlines lately? When I tried swapping out a headline, it caused the game to lock up any time I talk to another king. The Civ quiz also freezes. My only hypothesis is the file has this year's date on it and the game doesn't like that. I don't...

You Say You Want a Revolution? Well, You Know ...

Has anyone seen this before? I've just discovered democracy and want to take advantage of it. In this snapshot, inciting a revolution causes the game to lock up. If anyone has a suggestion how I can get this revolution to happen, I would really appreciate it.

    The Millennium Effect

A couple years ago, I was approaching A.D. 1 with a very high science score. In the waning BC years, I was making 4 discoveries per turn. In the A.D. 1 harvest, I got none at all. I know that the research box is supposed to double in size, but I was expecting to get at least one. At the...

    Launch before 1490

While discussing coastline protection, the subject of early spaceship launch came up. Here is a configuration that makes the Alpha Centauri trip in 20 years: 23 SS Structural 9 SS Modules (3 each Habitation, Life Support, Solar Panel) 8 SS Components (2 each Fuel and Propulsion) This ship...

    Must have been a tsunami

I have been playing civ1 almost from the beginning and I just had something new happen to me. The announcement at the beginning of city check had the usual disaster report: Earthquake in Capua, Mfg Plant destroyed. I just figured well, that's the breaks, but when I looked in the city, I had...

    Pollution Bug for Warlord?

In past discussions of the pollution bug: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=251335 The bug has been reported frequently at emperor level. It famously trips when an emperor discovers Future Tech 64. I have seen it myself as low as prince level, but it started after science got...

    Can money buy happiness?

Bonn's first screen shot shows the effect of 10% luxuries. 7 unhappy people made happy and the 8th made content indicate a total of 30 diamonds. At 20% luxuries, we see 11 people happy and 1 content after luxuries. 2*(2*11+1) shows only 46 diamonds being applied to citizen happiness. Now...

    How is this possible?

The InTown capture shows Ikarra with its mech infantry in town. When I move the mech infantry out of town, I get the OutOfTown picture. I get the (2)sad face penalty and the town gets HAPPIER. There is no change to the luxury rate. How is this possible?

    Beethoven in Civ I

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBq6zM81JXI I just heard this on the radio. I listened to the end to find out that it was the 2nd movement of Beethoven's 3rd symphony. But knowing that didn't tell mr where I'd heard this tune before. It's from Civ I.

    AI Cheats

When you start talking about cheats, remember it's a two-edged sword: 1) Triremes travel freely across open ocean and are never lost. 2) Caravans instantly reach their destinations without having to travel there. AIs may have trade routes with people they've never contacted. 3) Surplus...

Where Wilson and Emrich Got It Wrong

First of all, let me say that "Rome on 640K a Day" is probably the most valuable Civ reference you can have on your bookshelf. That said, there are still a few facts that they simply got wrong. To begin with, in another thread we are venting about what wonders we love to hate. At this...

    Pollution "Bug"

In other discussions on the topic of unstoppable pollution, it has been described as a bug. A comparison between an emperor game and a prince game has me questioning that. It has been established by a number of players that at emperor level, the pollution starts when you discover future tech...

    Headlines

Are you tired of the same old headlines? By editing KING.TXT, you can make your own. Trouble is - inspiration comes all too slowly. My first thought, staring at the blank page looking for a snappy headline was "How would they have announced the invention of sliced bread?". It must have...

    In Defense of The Cure

One of the least appreciated wonders is the Cure for Cancer. I think it's a simple case of sticker shock. In large civilizations, there comes a time when it really does pay to build The Cure. The price tag is the same as 15 temples. Those 15 temples will get you 30 content faces. So, if you...

    Exceptions to the Rule

What is the rule? In a single turn, a city cannot both complete a unit or improvement and complete a discovery. A city completing a unit or improvement will still contribute to a discovery, but if it happens to be the city that fills the research box, the disocvery will be delayed until the...

    New disaster in town

Just when I thought I'd seen everything, I saw a new disaster pop up: rioting. The "normal" disasters: plague, flood, volcano, famine, fire and pirates have messages in KING.TXT. Earthquake isn't mentioned, but I guess that could be because there is nothing you can build to prevent it...

    The world at your feet

The scene is 1780's France. While fighting a fairly successful campaign against the Romans to the east, the Zulus land a massive attack force from the west. My last save was the autosave of 1750. If I go back, I can defend my western flank and be ready for the sneak attack from the west...

    Caravan Price Spike

My economy is based on caravan production. I find the highest-paying trade route and push every caravan down that same path. Every caravan no matter where it's produced goes to Sidon to make that its hometown. Then they all go halfway around the world to Babylon for the big payoff...
