well most programs you run even if they are waiting or processing doesn't automatically 100% your processor. Personally i wouldn't want mine maxed out all the time.. I'm sure there's a lot going on then just civ needing to use more processor. Hard drive, caching, saving, etc.

What specific achievements are you trying to unlock? Are you playing with steam offline mode? I have 14 achievements so far and I've only played 2 long games..

You should always update your drivers. In this case i've heard that people trying the nvidia betas get better performance.

You haven't purchased any games recently. My latest was worms reloaded.. it had a patch on the first day.. been a month and I think it's on the third patch at least. Getting a game out and patching later is a common practice in today's industry.

Not sure at what you are trying to say geofelt. But win 7 handles multicore processors and threading better then any previous windows operating system. Civ developers even said that they built the new engine to use threading and the way dx11 handles it not only increases performance for dx11...

I have an hp laptop with a 3200m and I use the newer drivers straight from AMD/ATI. Just go to their website and choose mobility. You don't have to use the ones from HP, especially since they are over a year old Mine were also from Hp..

I loved moo2 just as much as 1.. Moo3 was a franchise killer.. there are new beta drivers out that help civ 5 with nvidia cards.. try it out.

With that much ram or if you have an SSD you can technically turn off your page file. Only sad thing is some games or programs require you to have one. But yeah that's a great place to start. What is it set to, make it bigger if it's low.

30 seconds not really that long. Civ 4 took a while when it first came out also.

My Quad amd 965 doesn't seem to take long on turns. Sure longer then civ 4 but even civ 4 had long turns when it first came out.. Extremely long turns...

My second game, I was able to complete. well at least get to year 2015 before nukeds started flying and a civ won. So it's not EVERY game.. But it still would be annoying to play to level 300+ and have it happen again.

Update drivers, directx, etc.. Verify gpu/cpu temps..

Run the setup.exe on the dvd instead of the autorun.

Have you tried forcing it with the catalyst control panel? I run the same resolution with a 5870 and AA works fine. I lowered it though because it caused slight stuttering when zoomed out and you really don't need high AA with that resolution..
