What hints and tips can you give for staying ahead in the technology game? How do you create large amounts of research and keep it up there?

Frequently I want to attack an enemy unit, but not move into where they were occupying if and when I win ... is this possible?

I'm assuming that troops/units cost x-amount each, depending on your civics, but I've yet to see how much I'm actually spending on my army, how many units I get for free and so on. There is also a civic that permits x-amount of units per turn as a draft ... but how does this work exactly?
