Evening One

The party was journeying onward, still hot on the trail of Ngoogol, though they were coming up on some quite rough terrain and would have to find ways across. There would probably be a need to pause and rest at night but there was time and progress yet to be made.

In the meantime, after many consultations and discussion it was decided the protective spell would be given a go, the scroll deciphered and ritual prepared. It was then that a distinct feeling of being watched grew on them, and somehow magically amplified that awful voice rang out.

“Trying to prepare a spell…? Oh, Ngoogol ngows the answer, ngows all you don’gt. You’re like childreng, playing with powers beyond your keng. How do I put this? Twelve points to Slytherin! Four points from Gryffindor! You call yourselves ngood nguys, really more like Lawful Stupid. Ahahaha, ngow you will die.”

Some of the group hastened to act on the spell, not really sure what they were doing and grabbing handfuls of tokens, but some others acted more calmly and held them back. “No, hands off, no one touch anything yet, we’ve got this figured out, gotta get the spell right.” So what they did was being to magically examine the tokens very methodically. First many tokens were simply examined then cast aside, reference points just had to be established. The plan was to take the next most powerful one, and the party got nervous as they continued to test tokens that were weaker than the ones before. But finally, with less than a hundred left, they found a token more powerful than any so far and decided it was now or never. The spell was a moderate success.

First, I’ll preface this with an admission and some explanations – while you are getting an answer to this puzzle, and it won’t really affect other puzzles/anything else in the game, you might not get answers to all puzzles explained, the merits of future puzzles should make themselves obvious though regarding this. Anyway though know a lot of you seemed to spend a lot of time and this so...

More satiating to your curiosity, I’m sure – this puzzle I must admit is rather tricky and less “fair” than some of the ones upcoming. Good news I’d hope, don't be discouraged, but anyway, this one was greatly helped if you to recognize a trick/shortcut so kinda much easier for any player who did so or had seen the answer bit, or it did take a good bit of math. Though I was willing to give credit for close/approximate solutions that were well justified or presented numerically, even if not perfect. I can promise you really wouldn’t be doing even more than high school algebra in the next puzzles, don’t worry they’re not all like this.

So what’s the answer then: Well, the strategy is this, and it works for any reasonably large number “N” of tokens/candidates/whatever. Test the first N/e, and reject all of them, and then take the very next you find that is of higher relative value to any of those. You’re probability of success, for finding the maximum valued token, is likewise going to approach 1/e, or about 37%. Really pretty cool.

Wikipedia would of course overwhelm you with other stuff and links and so on; I found this presentation of this particular problem to be really solid if anyone wants to take a look, and yes, sorry, this puzzle was a bit hard on the math.

One curious thing for me – I first heard of this problem as the “Princess problem” where the idea was that a royal princess eligible for marriage had many, many suitors and had to choose who to marry. If a man was rejected he of course would leave and not come back, so the Princess had to make the best call she could. Anyway though it’s been around in different forms, remembering that there are other Googles out there you guys :) from a couple of players I do think I was clear and did not incorrectly state things in this version of puzzle despite its background dressings, and an overall neat problem.

So there you have it. 200/e means you test the first 73-74 tokens, discard those, and then keep testing tokens but as soon as you find one that's more powerful, stop and use it for the spell.

With that matter settled, the party had chosen some champions to scout ahead for possible paths and confront any monsters on the way. Borin the Plunderer was to make his way up and around the rocky crag and secure some ropes. However, the pressing worries about Ngoogol made everyone nervous.

So Borin took matters into his own hands and addressed some people in the group:
“You think this is just a one-man job, you want someone going alone? What are ye, cowards? You, and you” he looked at some people square on “could you really live with yourselves if you let your fellow warriors die needlessly?”

Borin proceeded to extol dwarven virtues and valor and his ensuing speech was quite heroic, couldn’t be done enough justice. But the disappointing end result being, he had gathered just one supporter to come with him. As they ascended the hill to the gentler slopes on the other side, something nasty was happening. Out of the ground a great monster of earth and stone was gathering itself up, aiming to crush the smaller humanoids.

Spoiler :
Earth Elemental
VS
Borin the Plunderer

Borin’s companion was unfortunately not the strongest warrior either, and no matter how you sliced it, they were two against a quite formidable foe. Fate was not to be kind to Borin this day though. Out from the shadows under the setting sun, some slimy, amoeboid-like creature oozed its way towards Borin, dragging him down to the ground where he could not escape. Clearly, this slew of monsters was the main event, and Borin’s true hearted ally couldn’t help free him. Even the slimy monster hastened aside as nearly a ton of rock came crashing down, and Borin was crushed, the Earth elemental finally seeming to sink back into the soil.

Spoiler :
landlubber was Borin the Plunderer, dwarven member of the Farcrest Adventurers!

The second nominee for today’s dirty work had been Arminius, and he wasn’t happy with the way the party was treating him either. A path through dense underbrush could have been an option to skirt around more rock-climbing.

“Any of you going to come with me?”

“No, we’re sure you’ll just be a perfect match for Ngoogol, it’s decided”

So Arminius began hacking his way through the vegetation and soon was out of sight between the branches while the rest of the party waited to see what he reported back.

“They’ve no right to treat me like this, it’s so rasist, I’ll show them though…”

Spoiler :
Fire Elemental
VS
Arminius Ghkghkghkigikikikngyhgslkxikxikxikki

This frightening creature was clearly another onetime plaything of Ngoogol’s. A searing heat began to burn through all the wildlife, at what must have been many hundreds of degrees. The rest of the party who hadn’t already done so were scrambling to climb up the rocks where the elemental creature wouldn’t follow. Arminius turned at the last minute to meet his doom; he couldn’t fight it alone, and was burnt to a crisp.

Spoiler :
choxorn was Arminius Ghkghkghkigikikikngyhgslkxikxikxikki ! He was a Good-aligned Gnome and had just been a Foreigner travelling across the land (searching far and wide, hoping one day to understand, the power that’s inside.

Second Nominee: Borin the Plunderer

Everyone gathered together as the sun kept falling and were still very much on guard for further threats. The rest of the party had survived the day unscathed and finally decided to make camp, and it seemed their enemies had gone, as the summons of such elemental creatures to this world often don’t last very long. (but what was most to wonder, and most to fear, was not necessarily the unusual creatures themselves but whatever dark magics Ngoogol used to bind them so irrevocably to serve his will so specifically), Undoubtedly attacks like this would be tried again.

It is now Night One!

ahhh
I forget to sent answer for the puzzle to the narrator...
I wonder if stating similar solution, but taking only 50 coins as a referential group would be counted as 'close'?

That wouldn't quite have cut it without some justification or background, but then again the purpose of these puzzles isn't to waste time on stuff like numerical calculations or modeling. Though yes, as mentioned I did not require the exact optimal answer nor formally working it out or anything on this one, especially for those starting with their own work who didn't go looking for (though you could have also correctly found) shortcuts/hints around that other Google. But to get full credit one would have had to be close and not caught up in some other crazy scheme. I would have been happy to credit to someone, for example, with a plan like working out what they would do if the total number of tokens was, say, 10. And then decided that testing 3 or 4 out of ten worked, so giving a guess of 30-40% off the total 200, that's not exactly 200/e but it's getting close.

Anyway, I'm sure you'll all appreciate tomorrow's puzzle, really it's a different kind of beast, and well first we can all see how the night goes right :mischief:

ah, and you know what, Earthling?
I knew this riddle before... but I did not remember the answer and did not remember where from I knew it. Then... you mentioned princess marriage riddle. That was it! I knew this version!

Poor Arminius and Borin. They seemed like nice fellows.

All it required was multiplication if you found the secret on Google or mooched off another player or something like that :) Also, the puzzles are a sideshow to the main game really, I mean supposed to be fun and a little helpful but shouldn't have to ruin anyone's day.

But again, I know this was a tough opener, and they don't all require math. The next couple will be rather different. Not necessarily easy, but I think you guys will like them. (And I just haven't decided which order puzzles 4+ are going in yet, and no, there won't always be math again either, but the next two are set)

I also needed to remind everyone again - CHARACTER names unless you have some other concern/question to ask me, when sending in your night orders, already got a lot of that again.

Multiplication is cheating?

I wouldn't have known what terms to google. And it's interesting that searching through that many tokens can be considered a reasonable solution. The problem said "only a couple" would be useful. :crazyeye:

This is not your ordinary mafia game.
No mafia games are ordinary.
That's like cheating, though.
Cheating's not been forbidden, has it?

I wouldn't have known what to google either. :nope:
My take: if only a couple (three at the very best, like no one ever was?) are useful, then taking 73 tokens gives you a rather large chance of screwing up completely and testing and discarding the only two useful pieces.

Note to self: pick a less threatening name next time.

And I'll pick a shorter name.

Well that will just teach you. You could have had a very manly name like Bret Pelennon.

Why I remember when I was born, my mum tried to name me Cecil or something ridiculous like that. Anyway it was not a name befitting a child born with hair on his chest. So I leapt off her breast and clocked her in the jaw for her insolence and said to her "Look here Mama. I will accept no other name but Bret." And so I became the man I am today.

Right now little ones, I have kept you awake long enough with my tales of daring, now it's off to bed you go.

Well, Brat, I guess you can remember your being born since it only happened yesterday, eh? You barbarian heroes have short memories.
