Tom's Naval Shipyard

Nice addition! Thank you for an IJN DD. :)

Some suggestions:
You might want to increase the contrast a little for the next unit, it might add some more crispness.
For the textures, the Japanese used blue stripes on their DDs during WW2. SH has that covered nicely :)

Actually it needed to be retextured, but I didn't realize until it was too late. Up close it looks great, but the model used several patterned textures that is repeated over the whole model. The problem with this is what you described. At civ scale the detail can't be seen, and it became a big blend.

I'd have to map the whole ship out and apply a more realistic texture, which probably would have taken some time, so since I was already done with it, I went ahead and put it up. I'll go back and redo sometime later; probably when I get around to Mogami. But Nagato is next. :)

Maybe you can add some contrast to the Takao as well? Don't get me wrong, I really need that cruiser. But a little more contrast would add to the detail at civ scale. :)

PS: Do you ever get my emails?

A Wyrmshadow and tom collaboration? AWESOME. That's like a Robert B. Parker and Larry Bond collaboration! (too bad that will never happen :( )

I sent him a couple models I don't have time to animate.

@TOM: save space on your 240x240 frames by not making that wake. I tried it on a few of my ships years ago and could never get it to look quite right. As it stands now, it looks like that ships is constantly moving, then stopping. That is why I moved onto what I currently do.. a solid foam around the ships with a smokey texture that makes it look like its moving. Add a little pallete magic and it looks a lot better in the game than the large wake.

Tom these Japanese vessels are a wonderful addition. They're going to be put to use straight away in WW2 Global - Reloaded.

Look forward to the improved iterations later on but for now these are simply grand!

Yea, got em!

I don't know if contrast would help much with Takao grey areas. I think it would become a contrasted Takao that still has detail that can't be seen. I used the Civ 4 texture; might be better if I alter the texture and re-render it.

Good point. The waves do look nice, but the ship has to travel 10 tiles in order to see the whole thing. I already did the Nagato with waves, so I'll leave it be. I can adjust it for next ships.

I've had a revelation, and now I feel stupid. I wish I could go back and redo all the conversions and units I have done. :wallbash: I've always known the lighting I used wasn't great, but didn't know until now how to make it better.

I am setting up a new lighting system to use and get rid of the old one. The difference is dramatic. I'm happy and not happy at the same time because all the other units could have looked much better. I'll probably redo some or all of the ships like this.

Here is an example of Nagato before and after. You can tell which is the pathetic one. It's almost embarrassing. Live and Learn I suppose. Both are 256-paletted with same palette; and there is still things that can be improved over time. <facepalm to myself>

Hey, it's not that dramatic. There are just a few ships to re-do by now. Imagine you'd found out later!

;)

Welcome to my world. I've got a couple hundred WW2 aircraft I'd like to redo but just don't have the time.
