[Sword of Islam]: Byzantine Conquest

Great move to Religious Architecture from the Samanids!:goodjob:

I think we should save the Great Spy for spying purposes. The Abbasids have the capabilit to start researching faster and they are always taking upper tech lane, which suits us perfectly. Now we can even spy them in Mosul with the religion bonus.

Siphonarios can mop up some Bulgarians in the mean time, since we definetly don't want it to flip to the Rum.

I don't think any Bulgarians are going to spawn between here and the Sultanate or Rum. Plenty of Seljuk Horse Archers though.

I think that there's probably enough time to relocate our Spy to a different Abbasid city and build up the bonus again before the Abbasids will learn Medicine.

Blizzrd, are you sure it's the Jews causing trouble in Damascus (rather than the fractious Muslims)? I would much rather have a Jewish quarter there.

Nice job getting RA from Samanids before they collapsed.:goodjob:

We should build some monuments and get the Tomb of Khalid. Damascus, Tarsus and maybe Smyrna would my choices for those monuments.

How about building some troops to ransack Jerusalem before 1100, so we can
1. destroy any buildings in there
2. get the relic for Constantinople
3. get some real XP (rather than just against barbs) for a great general
4. get the temporary benefits of being Protector of the Holy Sepulchre until KoJ shows up (we can just give Jerusalem to them and then get it back, bearing in mind that they will likely spawn again on Cyprus later on)
5. Contact the Fatimids sooner

Nope, I'm not sure at all. But I am sure that I don't like losing 2 citizens from a size 6 city.

Agreed we should build Monuments for Tomb of Khalid.

We could fight the Rebels in plenty of cities to get XP, but this strategy isn't really in line with our goals of not refusing flips.

Well, how about giving Jerusalem to our co-religionists, Makuria, Georgia or Armenia after we conquer it?
If we really want to foment mischief, we should give it to the Ghaznavids or any other civ the KoJ isn't at autowar with.

Just a note about my internet situation: the storms in the Northeast US have knocked my phone line down, so I'm typing from my office. I won't be able to download the save till Tuesday morning at the earliest. So take your time Jusos.

I don't have a problem with liberating Jerusalem to Makuria, if you really want to do so.

Turn 0 I don't make any changes.

Turn 1 Constantinople builds guild hall, next castle. Dorylaion finishes walls, next castle. I move our spy to Mosul. Siphanarios kills a rebel peasant.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0001-33.jpg

Turn 2 Tarsos builds harbor, next university. Cataprachts are build all around. We meet Yemen, but they are furious at us.

Turn 3 Amastris builds lighthouse, next library. We declare war on Yemen, so that we can open borders with the Fstimids. Against all odds a Great Engineer is born in Tarsos.

Turn 4 Bagrati Cathedral is finished in Smyrna. We start building couple monuments.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0002-31.jpg

Turn 5 Constantinople finishes castle, next cathedral. Third monument is started. First Seljuks spawn, we kill 3, lose 1 catapracht.

Turn 6 More Seljuks spawn: we kill 5, lose 1.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0003-31.jpg

Turn 7 We research Finery Forge, I decide to take a four turn detour for Crop Rotation. We trade Engineering for Check System with Armenia. Cataprachts build all around. Trapezounta finishes castle, next Guild Hall. Siphonarious mops up some Seljuks. 1 Seljuk Ha is killed.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0006-26.jpg
Civ4ScreenShot0005-25.jpg

Turn 8 More Seljuks, 8 are killed, we lose 2 cataprachts. Tomb of Khalid ibn Walid is quequed in Tarsos after university.

Turn 9 Ankyra builds walls, next castle. Sinope finishes guild hall, next castle. 4 Seljuks are killed, but we lose two cataprachts.

Turn 10 We meet the Sindh and trade Religious Unity for CAste Systems, but they don't become pleased enough.

Notes and suggestions:
-Defeat the Rum
-Use reserves, so that we don't lose that many units in the flips.
-We should be able to steal Medicine form the Abbasids very soon, they are now researching paper (needed for Civil Service). :D
-We should maybe infiltrate the Abbasids.
-Meet the other Indian nations.
-Crop Rotation is finished on the next turn, Mechanical Engineering next.
-Liberate Ghazza back to the Fatimids, so that they'll like us even more. A horseman is coming from the south.

By my calculations we need another 8-9 turns of espionage gathering to be able to steal Medicine. But if we want to steal Paper also then yes we should definitely infiltrate Abbasids.

We should hold the Great Engineer for a Wonder other than Tomb of Khalid. Kizil Kule perhaps or Al-Jazari's Workshop? Kizil Kule is really expensive...

Agree, Kizil Kule is really expensive and should be built by a GE. Am I correct we should build it in Constantinople, or should we invest in another city like one on the northern coast (which have more coast)?

I thought the Siphonarios looked like a flamethrower. :D

Will play tonight.

I think Constantinople has basically the same amount of water tiles as most of the Pontic coastal cities. I think we want Kizil Kule in the capital. But Rodos isn't too bad with Kizil Kule...

Actually, Constantinople has more water tiles than either Sinopi or Amastris.
Rodos would probably be just a drain on our economy--best left for last to conquer.

So I decided to post tonight (since tomorrow is rather busy and I still don't have my internet up at home yet, and I live 2 minutes from my office).

1. Crop rotation done, mech engineering next (10 turns). Start to chop trees.
2. Great scholar born in Smyrna, bulbs 4 turns of mech engineering off.
Tarsos starts Tomb of Khalid. Kill a unit in Ghazza (controlled by Yemen).
Meet Ajmer (won't OB).
3. Rum declares war on us. Meet Gujurat.
Civ4ScreenShot0637.jpg

4. Undefended Konya captured and razed. All horse archers near Attaleia destroyed (with loss of 1 cataphract).
Civ4ScreenShot0638.jpg

Swordsman and 2 archers destroyed near Kaiseria. GG born in Smyrna, sent to Ankyra.
5. We refuse the flip.
Civ4ScreenShot0639.jpg

Refugees arrive in Sevasteia. Another Rum stack appears NE of Sevasteia. Erzurum flips to them also (should have razed it when I had the chance)
Kill all units next to Sevasteia. Another GG born in Constantinople, settle in Ankyra.
Civ4ScreenShot0640.jpg

6. Only a worker flips to them (because I moved all troops outside all our at-risk cities). Erzurum (Theodosiopolis) captured and razed.
Civ4ScreenShot0641.jpg

7. Our borders reexpand. No further flips due to empty cities. Minaret of Jam done in Damascus. Mech Engineering done, switch to Stern Rudder.
Ghazza razed and we retrieve a relic!
Civ4ScreenShot0642.jpg

Make peace with Yemen (due to war anger in Smyrna) for 10g +1g/turn. Move troops down south to prepare for the Catholics.
Civ4ScreenShot0643.jpg

8. Armenia and Makuria both beg to be vassals...no. Medicine stolen from Abbasids.
Civ4ScreenShot0644.jpg

9. Moved some troops into Rebel territory.
10. Escorting the relic back to our territory. Still seeing the "some of our troops decide to join the enemy" message so cities are still empty.

To do:
1. Move defenders back into cities once that annoying message disappears. A stack of cataphracts is sitting in Samsounta (for fear of flipping to Rum).
2. Try to raze Akka if possible (because KoJ's culture will annoy Damascus).
3. I have not started Al-Jazari's workshop yet (all our most productive cities can do it in about 12 turns). I'm trying to build hospitals to avoid the plague. I think Smyrna should build it, as well as the wonder that allows for 100% great people generation.
4. The spy is taking a circuitous route towards Abbasids (because spies can flip too).
5. Chop more trees in former Rum territory once they stop flipping our units. Dorylaion and Adrianopolis are almost done. I left some trees around Smyrna due to health.
6. When Stern Rudder is done, use GE to build it in Constantinople. We still have a great scholar, maybe he should do an academy in the capital.
7. I hired a Cuman Horse Archer to deny it to Rum, it's near Damascus so either sacrifice it or disband it.
8. Great spy is back in Abbasid territory after exploring Persia, consider infiltrating him once Abbasids learn paper.

What do people think about sending our veterans from the Rum rebellion down south and collaborating with the Catholics in destroying the Abbasids? It would be best to build up Iraq before the Mongols destroy the great people being settled there.
All we would need are some trebuchets (doubly promoted from Ankyra with at least 7 XP), some marksmen and may be some heavy infantry to counter their spearmen UU.
Razing all the cities north of Samarra (e.g. Mosul, Ar-Raqqah) would also nerf the Zengids and Ak Koyunlu.

Good job, most pacifistic of you.

There should only be 1-2 more turns of "some of our forces are joining the enemy" to go?

Should we have some Cataphracts hang about near Edessa for the respawn of this indy city in the near future?

We need to decide which city to aim for the science equivalent of the Royal Mint (forgot what it's called at the moment). I was thinking Smyrna would be our best research city, but perhaps Tarsos or our Capital might rival it. What are other's thoughts on this?

Please settle the Relic in our Capital, not anywhere else. :p
