Decade Awards Main Forum Discussion Thread

That said, I've successfully enlisted some Veteran assistance, and a Jury will be assembled forthwith, using some hybrid of the ideas that Blue Monkey has posted above (thank you, Blue!).
So are the Veterans the Jury, or are they selecting the Jury? Or are they forming a supercommittee to unilaterally nominate an officer to appoint the Jury who will then deliberate on how to best make nominations? :deal:

Last Day Today to vote in the August Polls!
QFT:
Interface Graphics: "This poll will close on Aug 31, 2011 at 08:38 AM"
Overlay Terrain: "This poll will close on Aug 31, 2011 at 12:19 AM"
Utilities: "This poll will close on Aug 31, 2011 at 03:19 AM"
Leaderheads: "This poll will close on Aug 31, 2011 at 05:28 AM"
Cities: "This poll will close on Aug 31, 2011 at 11:43 PM"

And to make or finalize your nominations in the 2nd Nominations thread...
QFT:
Nominations for this round will officially close at 12:01 a.m. PST on Aug. 31.
Even 1 minute PDST means for the majority of members the deadline falls on the 31st. ;)

And to submit a design for the Contest & Trophy in the Design Contest Thread!
QFT:
Submissions will be accepted through Aug. 31, ...
"Through" normally means "to the end of" in this context.

imho the two polls that end sometime today should be allowed to run as long as the others. The one that ends just past midnight as well - no reason to cheat members in Alaska & Hawaii.

:coffee:

I agree, Blue. What with the awful weather, lousy economy, and that cute blonde over there - nope, you missed her; sorry - I'm all for giving everyone till 12:01 a.m. Sept 1 (Hawaii time) to finish. Really. I meant to say: "Hey, time's running low, gang! Don't forget to get your votes and nominations, etc, in at the Anniversary Competitions Thread!"

...and Thanks for the clarification, & great excuse to repeat myself!

There were complaints about the dearth of nominations in the previous poll. It's difficult to understand why so many people duplicate nominations. This in effect cancels out their nomination for that category.

Absolutely - I have been wondering why people do this, too.

On veterans/jurors etc., I would trust Balthasar to pick decent people, perhaps in conjunction with Blue Monkey. Surely the idea of the Jury Awards is that they're given by a panel of experts rather than democratically voted; it's in keeping with that spirit that the organisers of the competition appoint the jurors.

Because it can get difficult, keeping track of it all - if one person doesn't nominate a unit because another person already nominated it, then the other person changes the original nomination before the deadline, well, Yikes. I've argued that you should act as you believe, and nominate the unit or graphic that you think truly deserves to win. Can't ever be disappointed that way, even if the field ends up a bit light. Now if it's a toss-up, I'd say by all means, give a deserving orphan unit your endorsement. You'll feel better; we'd all be happy.

Well, that makes it easier. You are wise, Lord Plot; Blue & I can do it. In fact, the process is already underway - has been sorta underway - and our first juror to accept appointment, an unimpeachable veteran, has provided insightful advice about who else we should recruit. I'm being very careful about it. I think it would be a good idea not to announce who the jurors are until after the whole jury has been empaneled - perhaps until their work is entirely completed! - for their own peace of mind. They will certainly need a private Jury Thread for deliberations. Is that a level 2 moderator spell, or a level 1 moderator spell?

Yes, that did occur to me. Maybe it's safer this way.

Private threads I'm not sure about. A private forum is a top-level spell requiring unique reagents so I can do that if need be.

I thought it was Sir Plot. Whatever you wise men decide, do it in private so we get to know the outcome but not the intervening step which can be misinterpreted in hindsight.

To be clear: I'm acting in a consulting role so Balthasar has someone to offer another perspective. The actual jury composition is left up to Balthasar & the veterans invited / consulted. No undue moderator influence is the goal.

Agreed on all counts. No hurt feelings. No bothersome lobbying.

And - imho - it should be left up to the jury the criteria they wish to use & the nature of their award(s). The whole idea is for them to draw attention to something or someone the polls may have overlooked. Some kind of a "... for contributing X ..." statement when the award is announced would be all that's needed, I think.

Re: Jury members-
Obviously they should not have any of their work nominated in the competition, which might narrow the field a bit...

I think that would be unworkable. I don't see a problem with having jury members whose work is considered - they just shouldn't comment on discussions about their own work, that's all.

So, when will the trophy graphic be ready? I am anticipating its completion so i can add it in my french city set page :)

Your Trophy is posted in the new Decade Awards Hall of Fame thread (real original name, huh?) and for your library you could upload and use the little icon I posted in my Design submission post (at the bottom). Right now it's added to that post as an attachment, so the website won't let me repost it here, even when I rename it!

Can i nominate my Siamese set in the 29th of September, for the best graphic award? Mostly asking if i can self-nominate, since others will not be able to post a link to the graphic before that date (since i want it entered in the monthly contest too :) )

TDATM was nominated in this category, deliberately. EFZI was also nominated in this category, but I meant to exclude it from this poll because it's already in the other one
Balthasar, what is the rule on nomination in multiple categories? For example I plan to nominate the LotM team for Best Collaboration next month, but LotM is already in the running for Best Fantasy Mod. Once something is nominated, is it excluded from other categories?
