[RFCM:BWS] An Iberian Love Story

If this thread is still open for suggestions, any interest in settling Easter Island? :D

Alternatively, one of the Galapagos Islands is called Isabella, so that fits...

I'm open for suggestions until New Year (UTC+8). After then, all votes will be limited to the submitted options, and the voting for those would be open until the 14th of January.

BTW, an update is in progress in an attempt to turn this story into a narrative one. This will be the first time a narrative RFC story would feature immortal characters (if the RFC DIs won't be counted).

Are you counting DoC? :p If you are, then I started one yesterday ;)

Not to say I'm not extremely interested at the prospect of this turning into a narrative. :D

Forgot about that, since I only thought of immortal leaders and units.

Nomination is open until the midnight of January 1, 2011 (UTC+8).

An update is scheduled for tomorrow, this time using a narrative style. I'm almost done on it and I'm just waiting for some people to proofread the dialogue.

It was a cold midsummer night, and Empress Isabel was lying back on the bed, with her eyes fixed to a window looking over the Manzanares. Smoke from the barely-visible bonfires from the other side of the river blocked out the light of the waning moon as her subjects celebrate the feast day of San Juan Bautista.

She had no time for such celebrations, however. Despite her recent election into the United Nations as Secretary-General, she had been sleepless and restless for several days over the state of her Cortes Generales. With the massive influx of conquered territories bestowed by her husband, Emperor João to her and her vassals, the Cortes had deteriorated into an unproductive council, with two coalitions contending against one another for dominance. On one side is the Nationalist coalition led by the Falangist party, who are interested on dividing the spoils of war among their member parties to strengthen Spanish rule throughout the world. They wanted to pattern the government after the highly-centralized government of Portugal, with its various cities ruled mostly by the higher-ranking generals of their army. On the other side is the Socialist coalition, dominated by the Worker's Party, advancing self-determination of the empire's various viceroyalties, citing the case of former vassals Mesopotamia and Mexico, which, despite of their independence, had remained allied to the empire albeit informally. Despite those aims, she chose not to side with either coalition, for she fears that the Falangists would eliminate the long-established viceroyalties of her already-overstretched empire and the Socialists would weaken her authority over the viceroyalties.

Meanwhile, João, although sleeping, is unconsciously reaching for her waists, trying to snuggle her. Being unable to confirm her presence by feeling her curves, he woke up to see her still sitting upright as she gazed the sky. He had done everything for her for all those centuries they have been together, yet she looked either unsatisfied or melancholic.

"Querida mía, ¿qué te pasa?" he approached her.

"Estoy harto de la política partidista," she whispered wearily. "Yo he dado mi pueblo tanto poder, pero rara vez usarlo bien. Ellos siguen avanzar en sus intereses personales y que haber comprometido los asuntos del estado. He perdido el control de la situación de las Cortes en diversas materias que dividen."

"Portanto, o que devemos fazer?" asking once more, he hoped that he would be allowed to intervene with force.

"Quero fazer uma pausa," she replied, "para que possa esquecer os problemas por algum tempo."

Much of the time, she restrained from using force against domestic enemies, as she believes that force should be reserved for enemies of the state, who are very often foreigners. She is unwilling to incite a revolution that would devolve into a disastrous civil war, preferring diplomacy with her subjects instead.

With his original suggestion ruled out as impractical, he suggested another, "Tu pode querer vir comigo para Alfa do Centauro. Espero que há um mundo como o nosso próximo da estrela."

"Mas meu caro, embora pudéssemos construir uma nave espacial, eu tenho medo que a situação agravaria antes da nave é feito," she objected. " Também não podemos simplesmente deixar nossos súditos."

"Podemos sair daqui e ir para outro lugar? Poderíamos ter uma nova casa nesse mundo."

"Eu concordo, mas certifique-se que eu gostaria que o nossa nova casa."

"Deixarei você optar o lugar do nosso novo lar. Alguns lugares distantes permanecem desabitadas, e eles nunca mudaram desde que nascemos."

"E os nossos súditos? Como é que vamos para governá-los enquanto estamos ausente?"

"Solicitando uma eleição repentina é a nossa mais melhor possibilidade para restaurar a estabilidade e para expulsar dos representantes ineficientes nas Cortes. De qualquer forma, vamos focalizar a sair daqui. Poderíamos sempre tratar com os nossos súditos mais tarde."

As she regained peace of mind, she laid herself down by his side as she drifted off into dreams of their new home.

Spoiler translation of dialogue :
"My dear, what's wrong with you?"
"I have enough of partisan politics. I have given our subjects more than enough power, but they rarely use it well. They keep advancing their personal interests and have jeopardized the affairs of the state. I have lost control of the situation at the Cortes as various matters have divided them."
"So, what should we do?"
"I want to take a break so that I could forget about these problems for the meantime."
"Come with me to Alpha Centauri. I hope that we could find there a world like ours near the star."
"But, my love, although we could build a spaceship, I'm afraid the situation would worsen before we could escape. Also, we can't just leave our subjects behind."
"Can we move out of here and go to somewhere else? We could have another home in this world."
"Alright, but make sure that I'll like our new home."
"I'll let you choose our new home. Some distant places have remained uninhabited, and they have remained so since our birth."
"What about our subjects? How would we govern them while we're away?"
"Requesting a snap election is our best chance to restore stability and to force the ineffective. Anyway, let's focus on moving out of here. We could always deal with our subjects later."

[OOC]
As I promised yesterday, here's my next update, which is also my first attempt on writing a narrative. Help from native speakers of either Portuguese or Spanish (the peninsular varieties in particular) would be appreciated because the dialogue is and will be written in those languages.

Oh geez, I started using google translate halfway until I realized there's a translation at the bottom :hammer2:

I actually understood a decent chunk of it by applying my half-forgotten high school Spanish. Wow.

I understood some of it using my recent high school French! :D

And it was very good. :)

This is why I love reading things written in Interlingua. I can't speak the language at all, but I can understand it!

Great story. Also, I vote for Hawaii!

Lol, I thought it WAS spanish at first with a few typos, but the ã gave it away. Guess it would be easy to learn Portugese after four years of Español. :)

The mutual intelligibility between those two languages is something that I'd definitely take advantage of while writing the dialogue.
