do you like the forum split?

So far in the Tavern there has been:
1 (Minor) Inappropriate Language infraction (…)
:wavey:

I do get your point about moderation in a quantitative aspect. But I still dislike the way the split was/is implemented and there's room for change.

Still not too fond of it. Don't really see how it's improving things, and also fail to see uniquely different threads in each subforum.
What an erudite and well-reasoned opinion.

Not that my take on it has anything to do with the fact that it is also my opinion. :3

Ever hear of the management jargon 'silos'?
By which they mean a great variety of things, but all involve not communicating between different areas. Specialism is all well and good for efficiently dissecting a certain field. But to be honest, if I want to discuss something very specific, I can probably do it in real life better.
OT was for finding novel and interesting ideas in all subjects, especially ones I don't know well. The more fora I have to scan, the less useful it becomes, because it's no longer OT, but instead the groupings by subject that I can get in real life. I don't want to go to an IT professional for computer advice on OT: I can do that amongst my friends. What was good was seeing the opinions of a diverse range of people on subjects I'd not normally consult them on.

That is utterly impossible the more specialised we become in our discussion areas.

I don't think the intention is to split OT into specialist areas. In fact, the intent is the exact opposite: forums such as Arts & Entertainment and Science & Technology will be merged back into the OTs. The only difference between the two OT forums is moderation standards.

Pretty much what Mise said, although A&E and S&T merging is still up to the folks in those sub-forums for the most part. I have not been keeping track of those discussions.

Forum split is quite nice, even if I have to have more tabs open.

I can definetly see a difference in posting style, though I am still wary of what a mod will consider unacceptable in the Tavern.

Moderation has always been an arbitrary and uneven business here, that will only be worse in the Tavern unless a real hands off approach is adhered to.

It can work though. Give it time.

I am unsure of where the line is drawn in relation to infractions, I think I had it figured out in the pre-split off topic after having a few infractions, now not sure what type of posts I can make or if others are going over the line.

Anything allowed in the old OT is still allowed in the Tavern. Hence, let's keep posting in the Tavern.

One thing that I have seen that I hope is not a precedent is a Tavern thread being duplicated in the Chamber and then the Tavern thread being locked.

So, if understand what everyone says, if I want to find back my good old CFC OT, I need to go to the tavern and ignore the chamber?

And by the way, what are those names meaning in the first place? They aren't really intuitive to figure out. In its description, the tavern pretends to be about "serious business", and then it mentions it's not really designed for "serious debate". Maybe that's because I'm a silly foreigner, but it's rather confusing for my little head.

Because 'SRS BSNS' is an Internet meme. It's intended to mean the opposite of what it's face value is. :crazyeye:

Well it is an attempt, but the old OT is dead a buried. It died under a form of over moderation and now we are left with two decaying carcasses. A few years ago posting in OT was fun, but even before the split things were going downhill and it wont change even if we split it up. The character of OT has lost its charm of years ago, which is why it is not that important as it once was.

I noticed that too. Might want to drop that "serious business" part from the description below "The Tavern", it's potentially confusing and not everyone is familiar with the meme.

Well I have never come across "serious business" to mean non serious before.
(until a few posts above)
It is confusing:confused::confused::confused:

From an meme site:

The Internet is serious business, and other variants are generally used sarcastically to mock another’s serious tone. This is commonly used for making fun of someone engaging in a heated and/or immature Internet conversation (i.e. politics, conspiracy theories and other similar topics)
