SGOTM 16 - U'nu'sual S'us'pec'ts

Have to say, thanks for inviting me to this team :D I don't think I've enjoyed a Civ game more than this one! :D

It's great having you aboard Revent!! :goodjob:

I don't think I've enjoyed a Civ game more than this one! :D

I would have to agree with this.

edit: and you make a great foil.

foil

1. (Engineering / Metallurgy) metal in the form of very thin sheets gold foil tin foil
2. (Fine Arts & Visual Arts / Ceramics) the thin metallic sheet forming the backing of a mirror
3. (Clothing, Personal Arts & Crafts / Jewellery) a thin leaf of shiny metal set under a gemstone to add brightness or colour
4. a person or thing that gives contrast to another
5. (Fine Arts & Visual Arts / Architecture) Architect a small arc between cusps, esp as used in Gothic window tracery
6. (Engineering / Aeronautics) short for aerofoil, hydrofoil
vb (tr)
1. (Engineering / Metallurgy) to back or cover with foil
2. (Fine Arts & Visual Arts / Architecture) Also foliate Architect to ornament (windows) with foils
[from Old French foille, from Latin folia leaves, plural of folium]

I'm starting to like this Astro plan
Have we incorporated building some Caravels (with some explorers) into our plan? :)

Send the spies on the caravels.

Perhaps even a Buddhist missionary, we may find someone without religion.
With respect to vassals, we will need to factor in VC. If we are going for a vote (AP or UN), vassal are not a good thing. May be better to get one of the foreigners to friendly and wipe 1 or 2 of the others completely out.

Ah I see. Learn something new everyday! :)

@SteelHorse:
I'm pretty sure vassals will always vote for you unless they are one of the other candidates so looks to be a good idea. :)
I think colony maintenance will kill us if we had to wipe/take a continent on the other half of the world! The Buddhist missionary is however a very good idea :) We do have quite a few religions after all!

OK - I played until we finished Optics. The Next GP from GP Farm is next turn. The slider is at 0% research. I am exhausted.

Unfortunately, I lost Woody2 to barb archer near Ramesses territory. Sorry - I got caught flatfooted out on a plains tile while exploring the map. I know he was our most highly promoted unit. I am really sorry about that.

Everything else went well, I think.

Great turnset, lots of interesting things happenned.

I can post screenies, I already have the save. :)

Random comments:

  • We need another galley for transport and another trireme for defense. I was building a trireme in Production.
  • We could use a few more workers.
  • Our trireme killed a barb galley, and was promoted to Combat1 but needs more healing. It was to busy escorting the settler to Two Fish to heal completely.
  • The Buddhist missionary on the galley is for the barb island. (edit: and there is a Con. missioinary waiting is Zhou to go to the mainland)
  • The spies are performing counter-espionage in Commerce and Paris. We've already caught one spy near Paris.
  • Ramesses begged Compass from us on t133, but I declined.
  • Brennus spread Buddhism to West Coast Silk and Wheat City for us.
  • I also had to one pop whip the trireme in Clams, because the whip went from 3 pop to 1 pop (I should have more carefully managed the hammers). And after I whipped the trieme, the barb galley went north.
  • We need an MP archer for Two Fish.

If you have time that would be great. I can do it later tonight, but I have to go pick my son up from school.

Yes, we aren't nuking this city to death.

You can't quite see it on your screenie, but it looks like the is a single gap in the ice, to the SW of the city. Who wants to bet a scary naval unit is in a little icebound lake?
So, do we need submarines, paratroopers, or both??

edit:
The last 11 turns got us: Maths, Calendar, Monarchy, Machinery & Optics. :goodjob:

Ah I see. Learn something new everyday! :)
@SteelHorse:
I'm pretty sure vassals will always vote for you unless they are one of the other candidates so looks to be a good idea. :)

Yup on the vassals voting for their master, but it gives -diplo to the non-vassals. Both because of having a vassal and because of the diplo-averaging. I don't know the exact details, but if you friends don't like your vassals, it impacts your diplo score with them.

I hear you on the maintenance, but with Forbidden Palace and some CHs, it can be mitigated, and if there are as many coastal cities as our continent, it shouldn't be too bad.

The last 11 turns got us: Maths, Calendar, Monarchy, Machinery & Optics. :goodjob:

:goodjob::goodjob:

I'll take a look at the save when I'm at my two monitor computer! But from the screenies things are looking pretty good.

Some thoughts

Micro
- switch East Fish's to Caravel this turn, whip next turn. Take nothing, just sail west
- switch Clams to Caravel this turn, whip next turn. Take a spy and sail east
- keep whipping in our in newish cities, NO more whipping in our core.
- after WB in GP Farm, assign both PH mines to specialists, so we have 2 scientists and 1 engineer.

- change research to Astro, bulb GS next turn if we get it :please:
- assign desert hill to Production instead of Commerce, reassign citizen from forest.
- assign PHF from East Fish to Zhou and mine it, asap
- swap East Fish unworked FP cottage for Fake Humbaba's unworked grass cottage (FH needs the food more when it grows to pop 3)
- after Trireme in Prod, build the 2 WB's for 2 Fish, then MoM?
- switch Commerce to Aquaduct? It has 3 unhealthy faces.

edit:
- cancel the free fish/clams trade with Brennus. Sell him fish for 1gpt.
- sell Rams either Lit or Maths for his gold. (and Brennus doesn't seem to care that we are trading with Rams)

Yes - very very good turnset:goodjob:
Great work pulling the GS!
Henry Kissinger has nothing on you from a diplomatic perspective - getting Brennus to pleased and opening borders with Rams for TRs. Breathtaking.
Trading for Cal and Monarchy - "twice as shrewd as an Arab trader".

No worries on Woody2, he did his job well, and lasted longer than any US opening warrior than I can recall. In fact, I thought I heard "Taps" playing when I opened the save.

Micro
- switch East Fish's to Caravel this turn, whip next turn. Take nothing, just sail west
there is a buddhist missionary in a galley just north of Zhou. I've been told he likes long boat trips. And he needs the miles for a free night of converting non-believers.

- change research to Astro, bulb GS next turn if we get it :please:
if you take the missionary on the caravel - he will pray for a GS.

- assign desert hill to Production instead of Commerce, reassign citizen from forest.
I was thinking the same.
- switch Commerce to Aquaduct? It has 3 unhealthy faces.
Yes - and we should be building cottages on the grass instead of the plains in commerce.

Agree with the rest.

Other thoughts:
No needs for HR yet - happiness is not a limiting factor and we are getting happier all the time.

Wheat can use another worker for chops and cottages.

Rams seems to be holding his own against Brens - this is v-good news.

And I still have power here in DC despite Sandy

Congrats to the Giants - a clean sweep of the motor city. Held the Tigers to 6 runs in 4 games. Is that a record?

  • We need another galley for transport and another trireme for defense. I was building a trireme in Production.
I don't think we need another galley, we don't need to settle any far flung islands or anything.
  • We could use a few more workers.
Agreed, but from where? Barb City could bang a few out pretty quick
  • Our trireme killed a barb galley, and was promoted to Combat1 but needs more healing. It was to busy escorting the settler to Two Fish to heal completely.
I would leave the trireme around East Fish
  • The Buddhist missionary on the galley is for the barb island. (edit: and there is a Con. missioinary waiting is Zhou to go to the mainland)
  • The spies are performing counter-espionage in Commerce and Paris. We've already caught one spy near Paris.
  • Ramesses begged Compass from us on t133, but I declined. Good thinking
  • Brennus spread Buddhism to West Coast Silk and Wheat City for us. thanks Brennus

This is not surprising, as barb galleys only enter culture to pillage or attack a unit. But it is a maximum of 2 or 3 squares. But we still need the trireme, otherwise the barb would sail back and pillage the nets again. Don't worry about the whip hammers, we needed that trireme asap
  • We need an MP archer for Two Fish.not for a long time :)
