Orders: While the war is going on, invest money in Education. Conscript significantly from Taranto- about 30 turn's worth recovery worth. Spies focus on Taranto and Caligari as before.

-If Donati gets assingments, he will be as cautious as possible. No pointlessly waiting around, of course, or letting reinforcements get into the city. However, any and all measures will be taken to weaken the enemy before attacking. In his view, he can afford to take things slowly.

-De Vetis takes a "Look After My Boys" attitude. To the extent he can, he has his unit attack only when the enemy will be beaten anyway. Of course, this won't always happen.

OOC:

I feel for the sake of fairness I should mention how conscription works in AoI - the Home Guard unit only has 1 Attack and 5 Defense. They're best used for attacking defenseless units and securing railways since the AI likes to block those. It upgrades to the Home Guard WWI, which has 1 attack and 7 defense.

The exception is conscription in colonial regions - while the initial Colonial Sentry unit has poor offense, come World War I being researched, it can be upgraded into a cheap 6 attack, 6 defense unit very useful in human wave offensives.

Just for reference!

Damn. In that case, build up a gradual trickle of Conscripts on a 10-turn recovery rule. These are contingencies in case of an invasion by France or Austria so we can afford to stand up to them.

Orders due in 11 hours!

Actually, lock postponed until tomorrow morning, given that I need to go to bed early tonight to take my cousin to the airport at 4 AM.

National Politics

Spoiler :
Growing rumors of Andrea di Napoli’s infidelity have damaged the standing of the Asmara Governorate. (-25 Inf in Asmara)

Taranto has seen growing aggression towards D’Poggio assets in the area, with many of the pro-Nationalist population seeing the D’Poggio as soft and weak for not wanting to retake Italian-majority areas of Europe.

In Cagliari, there were reports of protests against D’Poggio influence, but they seem to have gathered few numbers; everyone was too busy partying as a result of D’Poggio-made wine.

The Col. Dev. League has taken command of Mogadishu’s politics in the wake of the bankruptcy of the Italian East Africa Company, but they have yet to appoint a Governor.

Week 5, 1900: Britain/Russia
Week 21, 1900: Britain/Germany & Austria (all of German Africa transferred to Britain)

Wartime Events

Spoiler :
Per special request of the Nationalist Party to avoid wars against Spanish Europe, General Donati was assigned to the Morocco Front. Konrad Dietrich was assigned to the Catalan Campaign. Admiral de Vetis has been given control of the western fleet, while Benito Costa received the Eastern. (I suppose I should have been more clear that “Captains” actually are meant to command air units, which don’t show up for short bit, so I shifted all Captains to Admirals for free)

Benito Costa’s fleet sinks two enemy Cruisers with no losses. (+2 Prestige; +1 XP) His forces are not numerous enough to sink Transports, so that will fall to the land troops. De Vetis’ seamen send a fleet of three Cruisers and one Transport to the bottom with no losses. (+2 Prestige; +1 XP)

In Italy, a neutral General destroys two Spanish Infantry at the cost of 1 Cavalry. It is apparent the homeland’s artillery defense is lacking.

It becomes common thinking that the Spanish are throwing everything they’ve got at us in terms of fleets. Ships change command as Admirals de Vetis and Costa both take up a presence in the Western Med. De Vetis’ fleet sinks two Cruisers and 1 Transport with no losses (+2 Prestige; +1 XP) while Costa’s fleet sinks 2 Cruisers with no losses. (+2 Prestige, +1 XP)

Week 13 brings great news – no Spanish forces are landed or cross into Italy, indicating they’re likely running low on manpower, while we have barely broken a sweat. To ensure the Spanish presence remains minimal, we send a small force to guard the narrow corridor near Cartagena that Spanish shipping has been slipping through; Ottoman and Balkan fleets have blocked the Straits of Gibraltar for us.

With Spanish forces no longer attacking us, it is our turn. General Dietrich has been dispatched to the region outside Barcelona. While our Horse Artillery batteries are fairly inaccurate, they likely do their part to strike fear into the hearts of the Spaniards. We also have our Cavalry forces raid a local worksite of Spanish Civil Engineers; many of them die as a result. (Civil Engineers are workers that only spawn once every 13 turns, making them extremely valuable)

Week 21, the Spanish attack us outside Barcelona, killing 1 Cavalry. General Dietrich does kill two Cavalry in compensation, however. (+1 Prestige, 1 XP)

General Donati decimates the Spanish garrison of Morocco with his artillery, claiming a great victory with no losses. (+3 Prestige, 1 XP) With Italy’s African objectives accomplished, all the freed up artillery are sent to Algeria, where they will board transports headed for Italy so that they may help the fight against heavily-guarded Barcelona.

Week 25, the Spanish launch an attack with two Cavalry against Milan, but the local City Guard kill both of them; our own Cavalry then dispatch of two Spanish units. The Spanish assaults are getting more desperate by the day, as we can outproduce the Spanish and suffer far fewer casualties when we fight.

Week 37, we exchange blows with the Spanish in Italian East Africa, losing one Cavalry to their one Infantry.

More worryingly, the Spaniards land an invasion force of 4 Cavalry outside Villa Cisneros. General Donati keeps his cool, however, and realizing that Italy enjoys an advantage on the offensive, kills all four divisions of Cavalry with no losses. (+1 XP, +2 Prestige) Further north, a royally-aligned General destroys two more Spanish Cavalry. Even if Italy makes no further gains, it’s apparent who won this conflict, as Spain’s navy and cavalry forces have both suffered huge losses.

General Dietrich assaults the city of Barcelona in Week 45, killing 2 of its Infantry defenders with no losses. The city remains strong, but culling the defenses will make our artillery that much more effective. (+1 Prestige, +1 XP)

Week 49, the Spanish unveil their new Maxim Gun in Barcelona. It has become much more perilous to strike the city as a result. That doesn’t stop General Dietrich from killing off the local City Guard (high-defense, irreplaceable units) division, however. The Bersaglieri under Dietrich’s command also kill a Col. Infantry unit.

Week 1, the Barcelona garrison is redlined for the first time, our subpar artillery so numerous it’s still lethal. General Dietrich kills 10 Spanish units at no losses and delivers the city into Italy’s hands! (+3 Prestige, +1 XP) It also grants us a direct shot at Cartagena.

Domestic Developments

War Cabinet III: On the Matter of Spain and the Future

His Majesty greets all members of L’Oligarchia and the Cabinet. It goes without saying that we must applaud the admirals and generals supplied to our war effort, for they have torn the Spanish armada asunder and have also snatched two cities from their hands, demonstrating to the world that Italy should not be taken lightly.

The King did not request this War Cabinet for flattery, however; that can be saved for public award ceremonies. He asks a simple question: shall we make peace with the Spanish now, or shall we push onward to Cartagena? Taking the city would eliminate the threat of Spain from the Mediterranean for good, as well as increasing Italy’s hold in the Mediterranean Sea. While Barcelona was a tough nut to crack, it is presumed that Cartagena will be less well-defended and thus be easy prey with a swift artillery barrage. One key detail is that Cartagena is one of Spain’s main ports of call (it has a Victory Point location), accepting raw material shipments from the worldwide Spanish Empire.

Should it be decided to continue the assault on Spain, we shall make peace as soon as Cartagena is occupied, any other targets too expensive or too distant to assault at present. General Dietrich and General Donati will be cooperating for this assignment should we agree to assault the city; the army is too large for Dietrich to command it all by himself.

Should we make peace, we must then consider our next target, as Italy is far from safe, with vulnerable colonies and a relatively-vulnerable homeland. His Majesty feels we have two options: Austria and our original target, the Mahdist Imperium.

Now that Britain and France have taken care of our “German Problem” in Africa, we could safely attack Austria and only have to worry about German reprisal in Europe; we would only have to defend Milan and Trieste until either side was willing to negotiate. The German fleet is strong but is bottled up in the North Sea, and by the time it would reach us they would likely be open to a peace proposal. Austria’s navy is numerous, but we could easily gain local superiority with some quick battles and support from artillery on the shoreline. Retaking Trieste would give us a direct route to the Balkans for any campaigns we may consider there, eliminate the K.u.K. navy as a threat, and seize lands many view as rightfully Italian.

The Mahdiyah will be a difficult foe to tackle; even with all our artillery, Barcelona was a difficult siege, and that was with naval support. As all Mahdist cities are landlocked, it might be best to wait until Britain or France inevitably try to seize the Sudan and Ethiopia before we make our own moves. This will kill many of the Mahdi’s best troops at best or simply remove them from the Horn of Africa at worst. We must certainly send some of our best troops to Africa in the event of a war with the Mahdists, so as to give us an advantage over their likely more numerous forces.

The Government has spoken. You may speak… now.

We have already adequately retaliated against the Spanish through taking their colonies. If the Nationalists had their way, we would return Barcelona and begin preparations for a war against Trieste.

As it is, we will settle for refusing to aid the attack on Cartagena. To ensure this fully, we will tell General Donati to leave his post. If he does not, we will have him fired from our faction.

The Government understands the grievances of the Nationalists; Donati will be re-assigned to Italia's defense forces if the war continues.

It goes without saying that the Catalan Front is open for Generals to volunteer.

What happened to Cunning in the stats?

It's been hidden so as to make it harder to pinpoint who's doing what in terms of espionage, since Cunning goes up with successful missions.

Let us make peace, we have no great grievances with the Spanish. The D'Poggios support peace in Europe and once again state that our ambitions should be colonial, we should look to Ethiopia for expansion.

^ The Trevisan agree with the D'Poggio, but we should try to snatch up Cartagena from Spain at the bargaining table.

On more important matters, the Nationalists would like to propose that after the invasion of Spain, Italy should turn its attention to Trieste. Strategically, we can field mass armies of Home Guard to endure the enemy offensive, and wait for the right opportunity to storm Trieste.

If we do invade Trieste, the Nationalists offer to do our best to empty out our cities in the name of the cause. This is what the Nationalists were set up to do, after all. Only when we achieve a great victory against a Great Power will the Great Powers of the world truely take us seriously.

Eugenio: Brother, WHAT DID YOU DO?
Cipriano: I did what was right! Taking Barcelona was an immoral act, and so is taking Cartagena! I made a stand against the matter!
Eugenio: Brother, Martino Donati's campaigns have made us the most prestigeous faction in Italy! If we could arrange for Donati to take Cartagena, we could create a Taranto-Caligari-Villa Csineros-Cartagena influence network that makes us the acknowledged strongest faction!
Cipriano: I have decided. Brother, say no more.

Leonezo: I didn't expect to be promoted to Admiral so easily. A job well done, I suppose.
Donati: I'm beginning to get worried. Eugenio's scheming is taking more and more control of the faction. He's just too good at fast-talking our lord.
Leonezo: But- our lord threatened to sack you from the faction if you attacked Cartagena! He has almost no influence!
Donati: If Cipriano Aiolfi was his old self, we wouldn't be sitting around doing this. We'd be attacking Trieste with all our might, and the government could go hang. Or possibly declaring war on Italy to help the Spanish get Barcelona back. We're not doing that- ergo Cipriano has changed.
Leonezo: Isn't that better? I never met him, but judging from you the old Cipriano was an idealistic loony!
Donati: But what if he changes too much? Neither of us can stop Eugenio from corrupting him further and further. What if Cipriano becomes as bad as the rest of them?
Leonezo: I.... don't know.

Nationalist Orders: Use influence and spies to try and take control of Villa Csineros for Eugenio.

Enough of L'Oligarchia have spoken to make a decision. Peace will be made with Spain at the end of February. It remains up to debate, however, if Italy should make a last ditch effort to take Cartagena, given the unlikelihood they'd turn the city over in a peace treaty. (That is, the next turn, and only the next turn, could be used to try and take the city; peace will be signed either way)

The Italian Navy is composed of no less than twenty plus battleships, with dozens of land artillery to back it; any defense will surely be shredded as if it were made of paper.

Regardless, the Government shall honor whatever decision L'Oligarchic make.
