football thread No11

People talk about rebuilding and how long it will take but really this was a wasted season. The rebuilding should have started during last summer's transfer window. Moyes has just made it take even longer. I think it was clear at the end of the transfer window that he was simply not up to the job.

Absolutely. There are many crazy arguments for Moyes which do not make sense, this is another one.

There is a great conspiracy theory which states that Ferguson appointed Moyes in order to enhance his own legacy.....nutters.

How big are those in Europe by the way?

Pretty big... if you're a 12-year-old.

I was reading through some forums which is where I found out this sticker thing was a thing, but I never really heard of it in the US to be honest

Couldn't possibly say. As a kid only a few people I knew would get the album. I had the '02 and '04 ones. In contrast to say the crazes of Yu-Gi-Oh cards and Pokemon cards it's really small.

Well, in Spain it was an autumn fad. Every year when the Liga began and the album was out everyone would buy stickers and exchange them in the playground and stuff.

It's pretty big in here, as in most of Latin America. I can't bring myself to do it, I just don't care. I had the one from 2002.

Another poor performance from Bayern ends up in defeat…
Oh, stop moaning, these matches last 180 minutes and it would be no shame to exit the competition in the semifinals against Real Madrid anyway. Every single time Bayern lose, you complain about their gameplay… the style Beckenbauer lauds is only justified when the team using it wins, Guardiola's will still be beautiful football anyway.

I'll complain as many times as I please. And losing to Real Madrid is not the problem, losing because you play crappy, boring, unimaginative football with barely any chances on goal is.

Bayern are a worse side to watch than last year.
Tiki-Taka is awful.

They've been sensational this season, but there's no way Liverpool are going to win the title. The reaction at the end of the City game said it all. They want it too much. They're going to choke.

And there it is. I don't know if it'll be City or Chelsea (the latter's defeat against Sunderland was a genuine shock, and if they don't end up as champions, that will be the reason), but the reds are done. Frankly, I'm amazed that anybody but the most blinkered Liverpool supporter didn't see it coming.

On Moyes: I don't understand people saying United didn't give him enough time. I'd say it's obvious they gave him far too much. Being extremely charitable indeed, you might say it was unclear whether he was up to the job until the new year (though I'd agree with Mise that he looked out of his depth from the word go). By the end of January, though, it was only wishful thinking that kept anyone from realising that he'd made an irrevocable mess of pretty much every aspect of the job, and that this wasn't merely a few bumps in the road, but a full-blown managerial car crash.

I wouldn't rule out Liverpool yet Winston. There stock has dramatically fallen since that defeat yet one slip up by Manchester City and the pendulum swings back in Anfield's favour. City have to travel too Everton at some point and while their recent results against Southampton and Palace have been so poor they always up their game for the big guns.

On the issue of Moyes, I found a quote by me from last september:

Anybody want to make a guess on United's chances after 7 games in? I got to say I suspected they would challenge for the title and finish 3rd but i've seen them play four times this season and they have looked dire. The only real top quality i saw in the team was De Gea and Rooney. I'm toning that "3rd place" down a notch, 4th, even 5th or 6th look possible. Still, you never know, Moyes may find a winning combination and this horrendous start will be forgotten swiftly. Ahh football, you so crazy.

I really hedged my bets in that post I concede; I was right on performances but totally wrong on positions. They are 7th!

Pepe is an utter thug of a player. Him and Luiz I think are emblematic of thugish defending. Turned on some English commentary and all I see is stupid praising of it

Unfortunately UCL looking a bit out of question

Embarrassing performance, totally outclassed by Real Madrid. Ancellotti has absolutely destroyed Guardiola's tactics. I feared a repeat of last week's defeat, but nothing like this. Oh well, there's always next season.

Guardiola needs to understand that possession is not everything in football.

When you are chasing this kind of score is not uncommon. Real Madrid have much better players than Bayern anyway and play in a much stronger league (though that will change in the coming years).

Oh pfft "far better players". Real was getting schooled by 2 retirees and half a team of reserve youth players called up from the 4th division of German football [Dortmund reserves from Dortmund II the youth team] against Dortmund.

If a team that falls apart against 4th division players like they did - I am not sure how you can argue them as better players. Real won - but don't kid yourself that Bayern has been having issues in the last few weeks due to recent rotations (A draw, bad losses against Augsburg, Dortmund, and shaky play against Bremen). A bad spot but far from "much better players". This is pretty much the same team as last year, just played in a completely different fashion. [See midfielder Lahm, Martinez in defense, Boateng with lack of support, etc.]

I'm a fan of neither team, Gucumatz. But if you look at both teams, how many Bayern players would get in the Real team? I don't think it's even close. Bayern work very well as a team and a system, but player for player I'm not even convinced they're as good as Chelsea.
